Frederick Ward, also known as Captain Thunderbolt, was a notorious bushranger in northern New South Wales between 1863 and 1870. He escaped from prison where he was serving time for horse stealing, though he claimed he was innocent. As a bushranger, Thunderbolt robbed travelers and establishments across northern NSW for seven years, eluding capture. He was considered a skilled horseman and marksman. Ultimately, Thunderbolt was fatally shot in a confrontation with Constable Alex Walker in 1870, dying of his wounds in Uralla.
