Editor's Notes

  • #4 This is found in the first paragraph of page 17, at the beginning of the book. Reflect on the fact that the whole of Christianity hinges on the fact that Christ took on human form, laid aside divinity and became a man just like us. He did this that we can have no temptation that He has not been through, and that He would have no advantage over us in overcoming sin, yet He was perfect in all He did. So we too may be if we will but look to our heavenly Father and out of love for Him put our will on His side, asking the Holy Spirit to aid us. We can be overcomers.
  • #128 It is every Christian’s privilege to not only look for but to hasten the soon coming of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ by bearing fruit to His glory. Then He would soon return to claim us as the fields would be sown.
  • #136 The fact that men are in the Church does not make them Christians.
  • #174 So the grace of God must be received by the sinner before he can be fitted for the kingdom of glory.
  • #175 No mere external change is sufficient to bring us into harmony with God. There are many who try to reform by correcting this or that bad habit, and they hope in this way to become good Christians, but they are beginning in the wrong place. Our first work is with the heart.
  • #179 True obedience is the OUTWORKING of a principle from within. It springs from the love of righteousness, the love of the law of God. The essence of all righteousness is loyalty to our Redeemer. This will lead us to do right because it is right – because right doing is pleasing to God.
  • #191 Christ is honoured in excellence and perfection of character.
  • #210 Our Salvation depends on a knowledge of the truth contained in the Scriptures. It is God’s will that we should possess this.
  • #211 Our Salvation depends on a knowledge of the truth contained in the Scriptures. It is God’s will that we should possess this.
  • #212 Our Salvation depends on a knowledge of the truth contained in the Scriptures. It is God’s will that we should possess this.
  • #213 Disobedience has closed the door to a vast amount of knowledge that might have been gained from the Scriptures. Understanding means obedience to God’s commandments. The Scriptures are not to be adapted to meet the prejudice and jealousy of men!
  • #214 Disobedience has closed the door to a vast amount of knowledge that might have been gained from the Scriptures. Understanding means obedience to God’s commandments. The Scriptures are not to be adapted to meet the prejudice and jealousy of men!
  • #216 If you search the Scriptures to vindicate your own opinions, you will never reach the truth. Search in order to learn what the Lord says. If conviction comes as you search, if you see that your cherished opinions are not in harmony with the truth, do not misinterpret the truth in order to suit your own belief, but accept the light given!!
  • #226 Salvation is a free gift, and yet is to be bought and sold.
  • #230 God calls for your willing obedience. He asks for you to give up your sins. To him that overcometh, Christ declares, I will grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne. Rev 3:21.
  • #234 Almost Christians, yet not fully Christians, they seem near the kingdom of heaven, but they can not enter there.
  • #252 Those who have put on Christ will relate their experience, tracing step by step the leadings of the Holy Spirit.
  • #258 It is only as the old truths are understood that we can comprehend the new!
  • #260 The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears
  • #261 The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears
  • #262 The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears
  • #263 The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears
  • #264 The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears
  • #277 We are to ask blessings from God that we may communicate to others. The capacity for receiving is preserved only by imparting. We cannot continue to receive heavenly treasure without communicating to those around us.
  • #286 We need to go to Christ with our difficulties and He will give us strength. “He longs to give you understanding in temporal as well as in spiritual matters. He can sharpen the intellect. He can give tact and skill. Put your talents into the work, ask God for wisdom, and it will be given you.” 146
  • #298 Of all sins it is the most hopeless, the most incurable.
  • #300 Those who accept the Saviour, however sincere there conversion, should never be taught to say or to feel that they are saved.
  • #305 “ It is only he who knows himself to be a sinner that Christ can save.” “We must understand our danger, or we shall not flee to the refuge.” “We must know our real condition, or we shall not feel our need of Christ's help.” “We must feel the pain of our wounds, or we should not desire healing.”
  • #309 It is only he who knows himself to be a sinner that Christ can save. We must know our real condition, or we shall not feel our need of Christ's help. We must understand our danger, or we shall not flee to the refuge. We must feel the pain of our wounds, or we should not desire healing.
  • #311 No outward observances can take the place of simple faith and entire renunciation of self. It is not only at the beginning of the Christian life that this renunciation of self is to be made. At every advance step heavenward it is to be renewed.
  • #313 Therefore there needs to be a continual reaching out of the heart after God, a continual, earnest, heartbreaking confession of sin and humbling of the soul before Him. Only by constant renunciation of self and dependence on Christ can we walk safely.
  • #315 Those whom heaven recognizes as holy ones are the last to parade their own goodness.
  • #317 It is to those whom the Lord has forgiven, to those whom He acknowledges as His people, that He says, "Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight." Eze. 36:31
  • #319 Fear lest self shall interpose between your soul and the great Master Worker. Fear lest self-will shall mar the high purpose that through you God desires to accomplish. Fear to trust to your own strength, fear to withdraw your hand from the hand of Christ and attempt to walk life's pathway without His abiding presence.
  • #321 It is Satan's work to flatter. He deals in flattery as well as in accusing and condemnation. Thus he seeks to work the ruin of the soul. Those who give praise to men are used by Satan as his agents. Let the workers for Christ direct every word of praise away from themselves. Let self be put out of sight. Christ alone is to be exalted.
  • #323 The heart that has not fallen on the Rock is proud of its wholeness. Men want a dignified religion. They desire to walk in a path wide enough to take in their own attributes. Their self-love, their love of popularity and love of praise, exclude the Saviour from their hearts, and without Him there is gloom and sadness.
  • #332 The laws and traditions of men are exalted above the law of God, and those who are true to God’s commandments suffer reproach and persecution.
  • #334 There is by our side a witness, a heavenly messenger, who will lift up for us a standard against the enemy. He will shut us in with the bright beams of the Son of Righteousness. Beyond this satan cannot penetrate. He cannot pass this shield of holy light.
  • #342 Often we enter the furnace of trial with our souls darkened with selfishness; but if patient under the crucial test, we shall come forth reflecting the divine character.
  • #343 Often we enter the furnace of trial with our souls darkened with selfishness; but if patient under the crucial test, we shall come forth reflecting the divine character.
  • #345 But there is a line beyond which they cannot pass. The time is near when they will have reached the prescribed limit. Even now they have almost exceeded the bounds of the long-suffering of God, the limits of His grace, the limits of His mercy. The Lord will interpose to vindicate His own honor, to deliver His people, and to repress the swellings of unrighteousness.
  • #360 When you turn from those who seem unpromising and unattractive, do you realize that you are neglecting the souls for whom Christ is seeking? At the very time when you turn from them, they may be in the greatest need of your compassion.
  • #371 The greater their sin and the deeper their misery, the more earnest and tender will be your efforts for their recovery. You will discern the need of those who are suffering, who have been sinning against God, and who are oppressed with a burden of guilt.
  • #409 If the love of God is not appreciated and does not become an abiding principle to soften and subdue the soul, we are utterly lost. The Lord can give no greater manifestation of His love than He has given. If the love of Jesus does not subdue the heart, there are no means by which we can be reached. (COL 236)
  • #419 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. (Luke 17:3)
  • #421 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. (Luke 17:3)
  • #426 We are not forgiven because we forgive but as we forgive.
  • #430 Let the servants of Christ preach the gospel with the Spirit sent down from heaven, and work as He did for the benefit of men. Then such results will be manifest in the blessing and uplifting of mankind as are wholly impossible of accomplishment by human power.
  • #432 If men waste their opportunities in self-pleasing, they cut themselves off from everlasting life. No after probation will be granted them. By their own choice they have fixed an impassable gulf between them and their God.
  • #439 If they do not listen to the voice of God in His word, the testimony of a witness raised from the dead would not be heeded.
  • #441 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much; he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. (Luke 16:10)
  • #460 Many today claim to obey the commandments of God, but they have not the love of God in their hearts to flow forth to others.
  • #463 There is no such thing as a truly converted person living a helpless, useless life. Those who refuse to co-operate with God on earth would not co-operate with Him in heaven.
  • #465 Through the wrong habits formed, Satan will assail you again and again.
  • #467 Good works do not purchase the love of God, but they reveal that we possess that love.
  • #476 God makes no requirement without making provision for the its fulfilment.
  • #489 THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CLOTHED WITH THE GARMENT OF HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS!
  • #494 This will be the test of our character in the judgment.
  • #502 The heavenly principles that distinguish those who are one with Christ from those who are one with the world have become almost indistinguishable. The professed followers of Christ are no longer a separate and peculiar people. The line of demarcation is indistinct. The people are subordinating themselves to the world, to its practices, its customs, its selfishness.
  • #520 Christ’s followers have been redeemed for service.
  • #525 He chooses His agents not because they are perfect but because, through a connection with Him, they may gain perfection. God will accept only those who are determined to aim high. He places every human agent under obligation to do his best. Moral perfection is required of all. Never should we lower the standard of righteousness in order to accommodate inherited or cultivated tendencies to wrong-doing.
  • #527 He chooses His agents not because they are perfect but because, through a connection with Him, they may gain perfection. God will accept only those who are determined to aim high. He places every human agent under obligation to do his best. Moral perfection is required of all. Never should we lower the standard of righteousness in order to accommodate inherited or cultivated tendencies to wrong-doing.
  • #529 Of every Christian the Lord requires growth in efficiency and capability in every line. Christ has paid us our wages, even His own blood and suffering, to secure our willing service.
  • #533 It is formed by hard stern battles with self. Conflict after conflict must be waged AGAINST HEREDETARY TENDENCIES . We shall have to criticize ourselves closely, and allow NOT ONE UNFAVOURABLE TRAIT to remain uncorrected.
  • #542 He is displeased with those who are too careless or too indolent to become efficient, well informed workers.
  • #548 Even an ordinary mind, well disciplined, will accomplish more than the greatest talents without self control
  • #553 Ephesians 4:15 PRESENTING THE TRUTH IN LOVE THAT ALL MAY GROW UP INTO HIM WHO IS THE HEAD, CHRIST
  • #577 USE IT OR LOSE IT!
  • #579 Not by beholding others and thinking that we are at least better than they are.
  • #582 In order to accomplish this work we must follow His example of faithful, conscientious attention to little things. This is the secret of success in every line of christian effort and influence.
  • #623 By rejecting it, we reject His instruction, and choose eternal separation from His presence.
  • #627 The character of God is expressed in His law.
  • #638 The smallest duty done in sincerity and self-forgetfulness is more pleasing to God than the greatest work when marred with self-seeking.
  • #646 They have not yielded themselves to the Holy Spirits working. They have not fallen upon the Rock, Christ Jesus, and permitted their old nature to be broken up…….. Content with a superficial work. They do not know God. They have not studied His character; they have not held communion with Him; therefore they do not know how to trust, how to look and live…….. With their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after covetousness. (Eze 33:31)
