Editor's Notes
Brexit + 100 days;
Government position stated in the media is very much, “business as usual”
Malay visiting businessman was quoted in London last week as saying “never waste a good crisis”
Somewhere in the middle is our current reality:
Some businesses are benefiting from currency rates (10% drop against the Euro; 13% to the $)
Some businesses need to de-risk their customer portfolio, by looking beyond the EU; e.g. 2.3 billion people in the 52 Commonwealth countries, with an average age of under 30
7 of the counties that operate a trade deficit to the UK are in EU; only Ireland has a trade surplus
20% of German exports to UK; France 9% and The Netherlands !0%
So, an optimist would say that opportunity awaits
And that’s were we can help
A very brief overview of our links with the FCO
Commercial Officers based in most Embassies, Consulates, High Commissions around the world.
UKTI - The link between exporters and the UK Embassy network.
We also work in partnership with others such as:
Intellectual Property Office (Patent Office)
HMRC duties and tariffs, imports and export
Additional Notes: (numbers correspond to bullets on slide)
UKTI operates in over 100 markets with approximately 2,250 staff across the world to support UK businesses to export, access overseas opportunities and secure inward investment (foreign direct investment) into the UK economy.
1,230 staff overseas; 1,020 in the UK.
Increasing deployment of private sector expertise, both overseas and in the UK. In the UK, UKTI has 320 trade advisers and 80 on investment; we also have private sector expertise in HQ (policy, marketing, venture capital, R&D, sector specialists etc.). Supported by civil service staff (490 in London, 50 in Glasgow and 80 in the English regions).
Export services are delivered in the UK (through nine English regions, and in the devolved administrations), by International Trade Advisers (ITAs). ITAs bring with them years of business experience (sector and country specific) to draw on when advising companies - to make them ‘export ready’ or to further support their export plans.
Investment services are delivered in the UK by PA Consulting under contract. With HQ, they support the ‘UK First’ proposition: identifying location opportunities across the 39 LEPs, London, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
UKTI overseas staff are based in British Embassies, High Commissions and other Diplomatic offices (‘Posts’). They have detailed personal knowledge of local business practice and valuable in-market contacts.
Additional notes:
UKTI has helped tens of thousands of businesses of all shapes and sizes achieve international success.
All UKTI clients have a dedicated adviser, whatever their size or sector.
Our advisers, both in the UK and overseas, have years of international business expertise and local market knowledge and understanding.
