Renard series are a system of preferred numbers proposed in 1877 by French
army engineer Colonel Charles Renard. Renard's system of preferred numbers
divides the interval from 1 to 10 into 5, 10, 20, or 40 steps.
In industrial design, preferred numbers (also called preferred values or
preferred series) are standard guidelines for choosing exact product dimensions
within a given set of constraints. Product developers must choose numerous
lengths, distances, diameters, volumes, and other characteristic quantities.
Many countries including India use Renard series in determining certain
sequence of values. They use the 1:2 or 1:2.5 between adjacent values in the
sequence. So one value in the sequence will be twice or two and a half times of
the preceding value.
India had a missing link in this sequence which was filled in last August.
Where do this variation of Renard series applied and what was the missing
link?
1.
The optimal system of denominations of currency.
The ratio works out to be 1:2, or 1:2.5 between adjacent
denominations, which means the
next currency denomination should be twice or two and a half
times of the preceding one. This is also closest to the rule of
powers of three that a central bank can follow. And hence, after
Rs 100 notes, there should be a Rs 200 note, a logical but
missing link.
With the introduction of new notes, India will have
denominations of Rs 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and
2000.
