Unit 2: Business
Culminating Task
By: Brandon Neto
Executive Summary
As the employees continue to lack motivation we believe that the key points made in
case analysis can potentially fix the issue that occurs within the firm. As we move on we will be
focusing on how to reduce the time of 10 percent sick leave between the 35 new employees
and as well as how to bring their motivation up and make them want to work at the firm. As
clients threaten the firm to move on to another one we have found solutions that can fix this
issue. This firm has been held for the past 12 years and we believe that there should always be
rewards for hard work, and that is what is mainly being focused on. We will go on talking about
how to implement benefits back into their firm, as well as team group rewards, and other
rewards for their hard work.
Statement of the Problem:
Gerald and Jasmine Mortimer are both accountants with their own firm for the past 12
years. Their business has been growing drastically with 35 new employers but the two
accountants are having difficulties motivating these new employers. ¾ of the new employers
have been given a 2% raise on their performance which means the two accounts will be giving
out more money from their business. The feedback on most team’s performance and
effectiveness has been poor and clients are threatening to take their business elsewhere.
Gerald and Jasmine need to find ways on how to motivate their employees such as have them
try different jobs to enhance their skills as well as alternating tasks so they don’t get bored.
Analysis of the Situation
Gerald and Jasmine’s employees are unable to efficiently work together in teams which
is affecting their business because clients do not want to waste their time with a group of
people who can’t effectively reason and work together. As mentioned before there has been
10% increase in sick time among employees in the last 12 months within the business which
means the employees could be calling in sick to take time off. Gerald and Jasmine should both
fire some people and then hire new ones to help the lack of attendance, as well as to fix the
problem with the effectiveness to work together. I think if the two partners of the firm were to
hire human resources, they wouldn’t have to worry as much about the employees because
human resources will be responsible for developing employees within a company, as well as
team building.
Decision Criteria
As previously said Gerald and Jasmine have an accountant firm that has been successful
in the past, taking on multiple large-scale clients. Gerald and Jasmine need to motivate their
employee’s to work successfully in groups. They need their employee’s to fix their tardiness and
lack of motivation in the workplace to make the company successful in keeping these large
scale clients with them instead of moving to another company. It is important to the firm to
have their employee’s motivated towards the company and have them hard driven in becoming
a successful accountant firm again.
Identification and Evaluation of Alternatives
Gerald and Jasmine should look into either firing the people that have a history of being
tardy and hire new ones that their human resource team thinks are motivated and good
applicants for the job to help the lack of attendance, as well as to fix the problem with the
effectiveness to work together by implementing team building opportunities to interact
employee’s to learn how to work through problems/ situations together. I think if the two
partners of the firm were to hire these human resource employee’s it would be a great for the
success for the company. They also should look into implementing their benefits plans for their
employee’s to help motivate them to work successfully. They should be able to raise the wage
the employees are getting to a reasonable percentage that will not affect the company and also
help keep the team motivated. Gerald and Jasmine should also both look into team rewards,
the team that is able to collaborate and work well together as well as get the most clients
should be rewarded heavily. Gerald and Jasmine should also look to implement their benefits
once again because benefits take a huge toll on employees, and some usually prefer benefits
over pay raise.
Decision
If the employees are starting to slack off we believe that the best decision would be to
raise the employees benefits back to the way it was currently running or even increase it, and
also reward employees for their impressive teamwork. Some studies actually say that
employees prefer benefits over pay raise, and I believe that Gerald and Jasmine should
implement more benefits to their company, because it seems that their company went
downhill once they removed the benefits. Since they lack the money they can fire some
employees in order to stabilize themselves, and also remove the two percent raise but add
amazing benefits so that the employees don’t get upset. Benefits does include being rewarded
for team work settings, and there should be many more like Health Care Insurance, Vacation
Pay, Performance bonus which they already have, Paid sick days and pensions. Benefits mean a
lot to a personal bottom line, which is one reason why companies shouldering the cost of
offering extended paid parental leave have made headlines for offering new moms and dads
time off with full pay. This is an idea that we believe that will bring up the motivation of the
employees back to an acceptable rate, possibly even higher. We also believe that their
employees will want to come in to work if they receive better benefits or benefits in general
and that would reduce the sick leave in their firm. Holding team building workshops at the end
of each month is a perfect way to up the motivation of their employees as well, and also Gerald
and Jasmine should have weekly check-ins with employees; how they are feeling about the
work environment, the people, the job as a whole etc. Rewarding employees for their good
work can also include taking them out to lunch or buy them a gift basket etc. They can also
implement friendly work competition where the team with most sales at the end of the month
gets some sort of special reward and then form new teams for the next month, so this will
allow Gerald and Jasmine to see what and who works best with whom.
Implementation
Gerald and Jasmine’s employees are unable to efficiently work together in teams which
are affecting their business because clients do not want to waste their time with a group of
people who can’t effectively reason and work together. As said before there has been a 10%
increase in sick time among employees in the last 12 months within the business. A way Gerald
and Jasmine can get things running smoothly again is by implementing benefits into their
system. By doing this they have a better chance as succeeding as a profitable successful
company because this will motivate their employees by a huge percentage. Employees enjoy
benefits and this gives them an even bigger reason why they should love their job even more
and want to work there. This will reduce the sick time leave by a lot by implementing benefits,
and as well as increase performance based on employees. If anything Gerald and Jasmine could
higher moms or dads and have huge benefits that work well in their needs. This shouldn’t take
Gerald and Jasmine long to implement this idea but this should be taken in accounted for
immediately so that they don’t lose even more business than they already have. They can also
find a facility or program that holds team building workshops for companies so this should be
done at the end of every month to start and then after 6 months they can start to slow down a
bit and do it every other month or every two months, depending on their company needs at
that point. Weakly check-ins should be implemented immediately and it should always be
optional and be continuously implemented. Rewards should be given out sporadically so that
there is not a huge loss in company money but it will also encourage employees to always
perform well and strive to excel. Thee friendly work competition should be introduced after the
first team building work shop. After 6 months Gerald and Jasmine can determine if they would
like to continue with this program, depending on if Jasmine and Gerald feel as though as they
found who works best with who.
