2. SGOSS – Governors for Schools is a national charity funded
by the Department for Education. We match schools with skilled
governor volunteers from the business community.
By simply promoting the school governor opportunity
to your workforce, you will play a big part in helping
to drive school improvement.
We work with businesses
who want to make a
difference to schools in
their communities.
Our mission is to provide every school in England
with access to volunteers with transferable skills. We
want to ensure our schools are well run, giving young
people the best possible start in life.

How important is school governance?
Governing bodies provide vital support to schools, including
colleges. Governor volunteers work alongside the school’s
senior leadership team to set targets, formulate school
policy, and plan for future development. They set a
framework to ensure the school is running effectively and its
budget is being spent to provide the best possible education
for its pupils.
Due to new and complex challenges being faced by schools, the
responsibilities of governing bodies have increased
dramatically. In response to these changes The Department for
Education is focussed on encouraging skilled professionals with
business experience to volunteer as school governors.
