It then summarizes an upcoming FOSS4G meeting in Tennessee to discuss LIDAR, data, and imagery. The rest of the document demonstrates setting up open source GIS software including QGIS, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, and GeoServer on a virtual machine to display a shapefile as a WMS layer using Leaflet. It discusses why one would use open source GIS software and its advantages.
State of GeoServer, GeoTools and Friends 2014Jody Garnett
GeoServer and the Java toolkit GeoTools comprise one of OSGeo’s fastest moving mapping ecosystems. In addition to this core we will cover java-stack developments in JTS, GeoWebCache and ImageIO-Ext.
First up is “State of GeoServer” reviewing the new and noteworthy features introduced in the past year. Our six month release cycle sees GeoServer 2.5 and 2.6 being released this year. These releases bring together exciting new features: WCS 2.0 and WCS 2.0 Earth Observation profile, batch importer, and a fresh implementation of GetFeatureInfo.
Switching to technical for a GeoTools update. A passion for performance sees improvements in PNG and JPEG encoding, rendering from PostGIS and experimental JDK work. This presentation provides a review of new features, api changes and community modules. We have simplified the core FeatureCollection interface, introduced partial 3D support, structured grid coverages, multiple grid coverages and extended JTS Geometry with Curves.
Data formats support continues to grow with the latest GeoPackage, native NetCDF support and a new shapefile and wfs client implementation. Database users have table and index management methods to look forward to. Extensions have seen a lot of activity with WMS client improvements, vector grids, and a transform extension for dynamic feature collection processing.
Attend this talk for a cheerful update on what is happening with these great OSGeo projects! Whether you are an expert user, a developer, or simply curious what these projects can do for you, this talk is for you.

Most users know that PostgreSQL has a 23-year development history. But did you know that Postgres code is used for over a dozen other database systems? Thanks to our liberal licensing, many companies and open source projects over the years have taken the Postgres or PostgreSQL code, changed it, added things to it, and/or merged it into something else. Illustra, Truviso, Aster, Greenplum, and others have seen the value of Postgres not just as a database but as some darned good code they could use. We'll explore the lineage of these forks, and go into the details of some of the more interesting ones.
A talk about the OSGeo Live project; covering 43 projects that are available in a live DVD format (for you to run without installing). The project is much improved with OGC documentation and a description of many of the projects. New this year (thanks to some sponsorship) is quickstarts for several of the projects.

Learn more about how we are evolving our open source. In our evolution we’ll discuss how we are approaching project lifecycles, metrics we are tracking that give us insight into the health of our key projects, and how we are working to make this clear to the communities involved with our projects.
Also, we will discuss one of most recent key open source releases – Spinnaker (http://spinnaker.io/). Spinnaker is an open source, multi-cloud continuous delivery platform for releasing software changes with high velocity and confidence. Spinnaker powers thousands of deployments per day across the Netflix service.
This presentation goes over the most important features of GeoServer in order to give the reader an intro about what is good and what is super-good about GeoServer!

OSGi Community Event 2018 Presentation by Jurgen Albert (Data In Motion Consulting GmbH)
Abstract: OSGi is often conceived as a tool to write efficient Java Applications for resource limited Devices or If resources are a real issue in complex applications. On the other hand Microservices became the buzzword of the cloud and is often implemented using Spring or other Programming languages. OSGi carries the concept of microservices in its core and is therefore much better suited to the task then most other approaches. This talk will show you how a service can be built with a real-worldish use case, leveraging the power of OSGi R7. It will show the combined usage of PushsStreams, the JaxRS Whiteboard, the configurator, remote deployment and a lot of the other cool things OSGi has to offer.

Information can be displayed in many ways tables, graphs, or paragraphs, but the perspective given by a map is hard to beat. Maps provide a great visualization of data that is quick to understand and easy to read.Previously setting up web maps by hand involved sending the data with difficulties of choosing data format and transporting large amount of data. Or setting up a web service to publish the data and creating your own web map requires knowledge of different technologies such as WMS, TMS, OpenLayers and Leaflet. We happy to present an alternative:We are going to demo the QGIS Web App Builder, and explore some of the underlying technologies behind this great feature. As a developer you can also use this declarative approach directly which will be the focus of our talk.We will explore modern web technology and components. Looking at how React (a declarative framework for defining javascript web components) and OpenLayers (popular GIS focused visualization library) can be used together. These are leveraged by a “web sdk” responsible for generating a web application from a simple description. We are excited to show you how building an interactive web map can be quick, easy and fun!
STDM Online Architecture and Services for Land AdministrationArnulf Christl
Most people-to-land relationships worldwide are not recognized, identified or documented. Existing land administration systems are incomplete and do not perform. Lack of know-how, short lived projects and proprietary systems lock-in users and governments. Alternatives are needed. The Social Tenure Domain Model Software (STDM) is based on open standards and Open Source Software to avoid these common pitfalls.
When most people in the industry talk about online or digital reputation management, what they're really saying is Google search and PPC. And it's usually reactive, left dealing with the aftermath of negative information published somewhere online. That's outdated. It leaves executives, organizations and other high-profile individuals at a high risk of a digital reputation attack that spans channels and tactics. But the tools needed to safeguard against an attack are more cybersecurity-oriented than most marketing and communications professionals can manage. Business leaders Leaders grasp the importance; 83% of executives place reputation in their top five areas of risk, yet only 23% are confident in their ability to address it. To succeed in 2024 and beyond, you need to turn online reputation on its axis and think like an attacker.\
Key Takeaways:
- New framework for examining and safeguarding an online reputation
- Tools and techniques to keep you a step ahead
- Practical examples that demonstrate when to act, how to act and how to recover

2. Who
Randal Hale
Owner of NRGS
● Owner
● 10 years as a consultant
● 16 years as a Federal Employee
99% of my work currently revolves around Free
and Open Source Software for GIS. I love the
software and the chance to find answers to
problems.
3. FOSS4G in TN
● 2nd meeting this year at UTK. 50 people
discussing everything from LIDAR to Data to
imagery.
● It’s happening again next year so stay tuned.
Probably going to do workshops with the
meeting.
● Join the QGIS.us mailing list!
● Join OSGEO.us!
4. What is FOSS4G
● FOSS4G was first coined in early 2004 as an
acronym for Free and Open Source Software
for Geoinformatics
● Free means “Freedom” to view the source
code
● Most of the time it is “Free as in cost” and and
always “free as in speech”
● It is compatible with commercial software.
5. What is FOSS4G
● Vibrant Community
● Developers are generally open to suggestions
● Volunteers community
● Donation driven community
6. What we will cover…..
PostgreSQL
PostGIS
Geoserver
QGIS
7. IT’S A RUNNING DEMO
● This Virtual machine was built using vagrant
● Vagrant allows automated building of virtual
machines for testing and deployment
● It’s on github:
https://www.github.com/rjhale/terra
● 4GB of Ram total with 2GB going to
Geoserver.
8. What will we do?
● Add a shapefile to QGIS
● Take that Shapefile and import that layer into
postgresql
● Use Geoserver to Publish a WMS
● Use Leaflet to display that WMS
9. QGIS
● Started in 2006
● Desktop Editing Software first written to view
postGIS.
● Works with Databases
○ PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server
● Works with File based data
○ Geopackage, Shapefiles, ESRI’s FGDB
10. PostgreSQL
● Started in 1986
● Runs on everything (Linux if I have a choice)
● It’s a major backbone of the modern web.
● Current Version 10 (with 11 coming)
11. PostGIS
● First version released in 2001
● Extension to PostgreSQL
● Adds Geometry and Follows the OGC Simple
Features for SQL specification
● Currently at 2.4 (2.5 is coming)
12. Geoserver
● Started in 2001
● Publishes WFS, WMS, WCS, WMTS
● Follows Current OGC Standards
○ services can be consumed by any OGC
Compliant Software
● Current is 2.13.2 (2.14 is coming)
13. So how does it work?
Standards
● All of this software is developed independently
but it all works together.
● Open geospatial Consortium publishes specs
for WMS, WFS, WMTS, Geopackage, etc
● No one wants the extra work of making all of
this break
15. What are the specs
● It Varies*
● PostgreSQL/PostGIS is happy on 4 GB of
RAM (me: 6 GB)
● Geoserver seems to be happy at 2GB or
higher (me: 8 GB)
● QGIS is happy on 4GB of RAM (me: 8GB)
* The heavier the usage the more resources you need.
17. Why? Why Not
● It’s a capable server. It’s standards
based
● It’s compatible with commercial software
● Support from a community of users and
from Commercial Companies <cough>
● Worry about your data vs software.
○ You have to worry about software a
little but not a lot.
