NE Scala 2016 roundup

Chromium on Wayland Desktop (BlinkOn 7)
Igalia is working on enabling Chromium to run natively on Wayland-based Linux systems by improving the Ozone/Wayland implementation. There are ongoing discussions around implementing external window mode in Ozone to allow Chromium windows to be separate from the host desktop, as well as splitting the UI and GPU components into separate processes as in ChromeOS. Igalia is focused on changing the Mus demo to support external window mode and getting Chromium to launch in this mode on Linux. Further work is also needed on desktop integration and using Mojo for inter-process communication in Ozone/Wayland.

Why Go Lang?
Go is used for many popular projects like Kubernetes, Docker, Prometheus, and Ethereum due to its advantages like being statically compiled, allowing for easy distribution and parallelism. Google migrated its dl.google.com download service from C++ to Go because the Go version was much less code, more readable, testable, and fixed HTTP issues while having equal or better performance. Go's creators aimed to design a language that is simple yet powerful for building reliable and efficient software in the modern era.
Zope is dead - Long live Zope
Zope is an open source web application server that pioneered object publishing, traversal, and a persistent object storage database called ZODB. It had early success in the late 1990s and 2000s but also faced challenges including a complex architecture, backwards compatibility issues, and lack of hype. Today the Zope community lives on through related projects like Plone, Buildout, Repoze, Pyramid, and Deliverance which continue to develop and improve upon Zope's innovations.

The DocdokuPLM is an open-source platform allowing its users to manage their product's lifecycle, from design to maintenance. The main application is built upon RequireJS and BackboneJS librairies for the front-end, and JEE for back-end. The GUI is quite complete, and may won't fit for all users involved in the process. This is especially the case for CAD designers who just need to commit their changes without having such a rich graphic interface. To answer this need, we developped a desktop application, interfacing our server with the CAD designer's file system : the DPLM.
First, we developped a command line interface, which is very lightweight and really great for advanced users. However providing a GUI which could interface with the CLI and allow the user to manage multiple files upload at once was more than needed.
Providing a consistent user experience across different platforms has been one of our challenges in the context of our application. The choice of a web framework was then a natural choice. But how could we get it run within a desktop application ? Node-Webkit brought us the ability to interact directly with the user's file system and embed the app in a webview, letting us the choice to use any web framework we wanted to use.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
