Archaeologists have discovered a new shrine in Nepal dating back to 550 BC that may be the birthplace of Buddha, as evidenced by a fossilized tree root found there matching descriptions of the location of Buddha's birth and radiocarbon dating of the site. The shrine was a pilgrimage location for monks until being lost from the 15th century until its rediscovery in 1896.
