2.16 About Transmen, struggle, overcoming and taking a stand.
Black Transmen Are Stepping Up & Stepping Out!
Individual Business Owners reaching out, bridging the gap between the LGBT Community
Audre Lorde in an interview with Joseph Beams states, "It's a struggle but that's why we exist, so that another generation of Lesbians of color will not have to invent themselves, or their history, all over again.” At the end of the and at the being of everyday that quote is on my mind. I do this work so that another generation of queer people of color self-identified or otherwise, will not have to redefine themselves. This award is significant because is comes from people that truly understand that struggles and rewards of community building. So, to be recognized by my peers and co-collaborators in the fight for justice, inclusions and self liberation is, in my opinion, high praise!
The Queer Community Reaches OUT! Statement of Motivation a. My personal exploration of gender identity and expression led me to realize that there weren’t many people where I was on the gender spectrum which is somewhere between transgender and masculine identified lesbian. In 2008 I sat on a transgender panel at Borders and Bridges, a one day queer symposium held in Dallas. I was the only black person on that panel. It was then that I decided that I needed to work to create space for black studs and transmen to be empowered to have their voices heard. This marked the beginning of my work in gender justice. Statement of Purpose a. Words cannot express the joy my heart feels when I see my MoC brothers out and proud. Visibility is so important in our community where so many people feel alone because of how they identify. It is my sincere determination to continue to educate and empower marginalized members of the queer community, which of course include people of color, gender nonconforming and transgender people. It takes considerable courage and strength to move through this world as a masculine of center person of color and I am dedicated to working toward gender justice especially the forging of a non-oppressive masculinity. Black Transmen Advocacy Award Information - Q. Ragsdale
The Trans Community Reaches OUT! STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION My motivation comes from the teachings of my Mother to help create a community of people that love, share and take care of each other. It’s my belief that being Transgender adds on to the need to assist people with many of the gifts God has provided me. I give in anyway I can whether it’s my time, a kind word, requested information or my biggest gift a good laugh. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE My purpose is to assist my community with the knowledge of finances that will improve their lives and as well as the lives of their families. If we are equipped with better finances it will allow us more freedom to spend time with our families as well as have the ability to give back whether it’s writing a check, donating personal or household items, starting businesses together, traveling to support one other or the giving our time, blood, sweat and tears.

Darianne: Statement of Motivation Having worked in the not-for-profit/ social service community for well over 12 years, I have dedicated my career to working toward the betterment of our community as a whole. I am an advocate and ally for those in our community who are marginalized and disproportionally impacted by racism, sexism and other social ills. The transgender community, particularly the transgender male community, is often overlooked and definitely underserved. I am committed to championing against social injustice. 3. Statement of Purpose Through my advocacy, I hope to assist in reducing stigma within the mainstream community as it relates to the transgender community. I applaud efforts of Black Transmen Inc. and their willingness to include allies into their progression and work.& Lisa

Dr. Blummer is a Health Care Professional also Vice Chair of Transgender Education Network of Texas Katy Stewart STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION When I first transitioned on the job in April 2001, it was largely due to the support network both via the HR department at work and the social network I was engaging in the community. At one of the supportive meeting of the A&M GLBTA that I attended, I learned of racism and the effect of language in othering those we share community with. had been a peer educator when I was an undergraduate in the 1990’s Now, within my own identity I had a way to build connection with other people and educate through nurturing compassion. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE My purpose is to tell stories. By sharing our lives with one another we grow as a more compassionate people. Personally, I hope to live out diversity through the conversion of intellectual understanding to lived action while pursuing equality for the transgender community as a whole. I value a future wherein I am engaged and see the beauty of a gender community of more colors and identity than exist in the Crayola big box of colors. I hope to build Transgender Education Network of Texas into a statewide organization that truly embraces through an ethic of collaboration and synergy.

Toyneo is one of the first transmen I have ever looked up to as far as learning and understanding the safe methods of being a man in transition. His progress has really been great and I am very proud of his drive, his dedication, respect for others, and love for life regardless of any disposition. He has been and hopefully will still continue to be a very prominent figure in black transman community.

Justice Williams Victor Shane Allen
Justice Williams is a published poet originally from Atlantic City New Jersey. He is a founding member and past Director of Freeing Ourselves, a community and youth-run organization based in New Bedford, Mass. During this time he created an alternative school, the Liberation School, that served "at risk" and court-involved youth. Justice connected this project with New Bedford Youth Build by running the Liberation School on their site. Prior to consulting for Social Justice Initiative, he worked with youth in the South End, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury areas of Boston; organized the queer community to fight against the violence toward transgender people; built networks with youth and social justice organizations in the Boston Area; served as the Director of Programs at The City School; and served as Executive Director of Boston Mobilization. His strengths are grassroots fundraising, networking, training, curriculum development and collaborating to bring people together that normally would not work together.
Statement of Motivation. The Statement of Motivation must not exceed 100 words and should highlight the formative experiences that compelled you to become a Transgender Advocate. It may include a description of educational programs or life experiences that have formed the basis of your commitment to the needs of the transgender community. The lack of men of color and trans experience in an open space prompted me to get involved in transgender advocacy. Going through my transition I was not able to locate very many men of color that I could question about the process nor connect with; making sure we have a face is my motivation. 3. Statement of Purpose. The Statement of Purpose must not exceed 100 words and should describe what you hope to achieve in your mission as an advocate, the most meaningful aspects of that involvement, and what aspirations you hold for your future work. My purpose as a transgender advocate is simply to help anyone I can in anyway I can. If one person is touched by anything I do then I have fulfilled my mission and only aspire to continue helping and changing lives.
In August of 2010, I had made the decision to begin my transition to align my body and spirit. I had struggled with my gender since age 7. I found myself being somewhat obsessed with finding documentaries, talk-shows and movies, relating to the transgender community. Television was my only connection to a world that I felt would understand me and my struggles. In 2010, I had finally befriended a man of trans experience for the first time. It was that moment, that I found relief to my pain. I want to help provide that same pain relief to as many men as possible. During my mission as an advocate within my community, I wish to see a movement as powerful as the previous civil rights movements, within our history. I know that this mission can and will be achieved. I take pride in knowing that each encouraging word or praise that I share with my brothers, help aide in their quality of life. Brotherhood, progression and leadership are most meaningful to me. Without those things, our community could continue to hurt itself and become consumed by the prejudices that lure my trans brothers and sisters into the depths of self-hatred and defeat.

Pastor Carl Madgett Associate Pastor - Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church of Christ TransSaints Midwest Region Minister of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries "Pastor Carl’s heart’s desire is to start an outreach/mentoring program for LGBT youth. He feels that they need to know that there is someone who does care about them and who will help guide them and not be predatory to them. Pastor Carl feels that many of the LGBT youth need someone to help them because a lot of them have been rejected from their families and are living out on the streets where they find themselves caught up in drugs and prostitution. He wants to help mend broken hearts and help save lives through the love of Jesus Christ which is what helped to change and save him."
Kylar Broadus: TPOCC Trans People of Color Coalition (TPOCC) is the only national social justice organization that promotes the interest of Trans People of Color.
