“I learned so much about myself and working with others. My crew left every piece of land we
encountered better than when we found it. I was surprised how much my goals shifted from just
doing good project work with my crew to a greater sense of purpose for the community at large.”
CONTINUING A POWERFUL LEGACY
With the start of the CCC in 1933, conservation corps have been instrumental in
deploying young people to projects where they can achieve significant on-the-ground
results. In 2014 MCC corps members were the caretakers of 814 miles of trails in our most
cherished public places, like the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the Rattlesnake Recreation
Area, and Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. They also treated over 54,000 acres
for invasive weeds, which cause billions of dollars in damages and losses on habitat,
watersheds, farms, and ranchlands. While noteworthy, results like these are magnified
tenfold when MCC corps members realize that their ability to impact the world is far
greater than even these conservation achievements.
By weaving together leadership development, civic engagement, and training with hands-
on service in the outdoors, MCC helps young people develop vital competencies that
build a foundation for achieving success throughout life. MCC helps participants develop
specifically in the critical areas of leadership, communication and teambuilding, service
and citizenship, stewardship, and hard work for quality results. Through their service, our
corps members experience the full measure of their character and discover their capacity
to lead in their lives and communities.
MCC fundamentally believes that, now more than ever, the civic engagement of young
people is vital for both their individual development and a well-functioning democracy.
MCC believes that the true power of a corps experience is in helping young people realize
their ability and responsibility to be leading citizens in strengthening the civic, social, and
conservation fabric of our nation.
