The beehive is a symbol that was used by Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers when settling Utah. It is depicted on the Beehive House where Brigham Young lived and on the Salt Lake Temple doorknobs. The beehive symbol is also on the Utah state flag. Within three years of Joseph Smith's death, Brigham Young led the Mormons to Salt Lake Valley where they established settlements and built up the community, as Joseph Smith had prophesied. Brigham Young encouraged education, art, music and fostering community development in addition to establishing homes and farms.
