This document summarizes an experimental study from 1941-1942 that used a device called the KRA Cuff to temporarily cut off blood flow to the brain in human subjects. The goal was to understand loss of consciousness in pilots during high-altitude flights. The cuff could shut off blood flow for up to 100 seconds, causing subjects to lose consciousness within 4-10 seconds. A consistent pattern of effects was observed as blood flow was restored. The study provided insights but was also controversial given its use of human subjects without full informed consent.
