2. Introduction
• With extensive experience in equity and alternative
investments spanning global capital markets, Brian Lippey
serves as CEO of Caledonia Partners. He maintains a strong
interest in international relations and is active on the
Council on Foreign Relations. In 2013, Brian Lippey
presented before his alma mater, Columbia University’s
School of International and Public Affairs, through a series
of brown-bag lunch discussions.
The first lecture drew on his experience in emerging-
markets hedge funds and gave students insight into the
work culture and skills required to maximize
competitiveness for such positions.

3. Emerging Markets in Columbia
• With the second lecture, he shifted toward an in-depth look at
strategies specific to frontier and emerging markets.
Mr. Lippey used case studies related to positions in US dollars vis-a-
vis Brazilian reals and taking a long position on Brazilian interest
rates to define the due diligence required to obtain optimal returns.
He also explored markets with "high risk, high reward" dynamic,
with Myanmar coming to the fore as a frontier market offering an
ideal combination of abundant natural resources and
underdeveloped infrastructure.
The final lecture in the series focused on risk management best
practices and ways of avoiding potential losses in the face of
sustained downturns.
