01 - WHAT IS
DODGEBALL? Dodgeball is a team sport in
which players on two
opposing teams try to throw
balls and hit opponents while
avoiding being hit
themselves.
The sport was first played in Africa,
approximately two hundred years
ago, with a deadly twist. Instead of
soft balls, dodgeball was played with
large rocks or other harder objects
found in the nature. The African
tribes used to rely on this game to hit
their opponents with rocks, so they
can injure them.
HISTORY
• 500 BC – Some histories claim
a game similar to dodgeball
was played in ancient Asia,
Greece and Mesoamerica.
• 17th Century –Similar to
dodgeball, African warriors
were trained for battle using
rocks with the intent of
incapacitating and possibly
killing opponents.
WHEN AND HOW WAS
DODGEBALL INVENTED?
• THE GAME STARTS WITH 6 BALLS, ON THE CENTRE LINE. PLAYERS START BEHIND
THE END LINE AND AT THE OPENING RUSH, EACH TEAM RETRIEVES THE BALLS TO
THEIR RIGHT ON THE CENTRE LINE. THE BALL MUST BE TAKEN BEHIND THE
ATTACK LINE BEFORE IT CAN BE THROWN.
.
• The object of the game is to eliminate the opposing players by getting them OUT.
You are out if: The ball hits you below the shoulders. You step over the sideline or
the centreline. You throw a live ball and it is caught by your opponent.
• You can block a thrown ball with a held ball but if you drop the blocking ball or the
thrown ball still ends up hitting your body, you are out.
HOW TO PLAY
DODGEBALL?
• A ball is dead and cannot get you out if: It hits the ground, wall or has already
hit another player first. It is held for longer than 10 seconds. Dead balls are
rolled over immediately to the other team.
• When you get out, stand on the sideline in the order you got out. If a
teammate catches a ball, you can return to the court from the backline.
• If the game comes down to 1 player on each team, they have 10 seconds to
hit each other out. After this time, the neutral zone is dissolved and the
players may move about freely on the court. The last player to get their
opponent out wins.
HOW TO PLAY
DODGEBALL?
• Court Size: 18m x 9m or a
Volleyball Court. Equipment: 6
x Dodgeballs.
COUR
T
SCORING
• the aim of the game is to eliminate players of
the opposing team, which can be done in a
number of ways.
• A player is hit and the ball is not caught
before becoming dead, that player is
eliminated.
• However, if a player throws a ball that is
caught by an opponent, the throwing player is
eliminated from the game.
• Some variations of the game allow for a
reinstatement of players if their team catches
the ball. This can ensure the game lasts for a
longer time-period and provides an incentive
for catching the ball, as opposed to just
dodging the ball.
• All players must sign a registration form every season before playing their first game.
The form outlines the league’s liability and sportsmanship policies. The form will be
available in hard copy at the centre.
• Players are permitted to cross the midline during the opening rush only.
• If a player catches a live ball thrown by the opposition, then the player who threw the
ball is out. Additionally, an eliminated member of the catcher’s team may return to the
field of play.
• Any player intentionally throwing a ball at an opposition player whose hand is raised
will be ‘out’.
• Players are not permitted to kick or step on the ball.
• Eliminated players must not interfere with or touch any balls while ‘out’.
• When a player is ‘out’ they must raise their hand and leave the field of play
immediately, without interfering with play in any way.
