This is an overview of the dashboard I made for visualizing BoxofficeMojo's all-time domestic data.
The live dashboard can be found here: http://bit.ly/boxoffice_dashboard
This contains some information about how to use it to get the most out of it.
Enjoy!
2. Overview
• Box-office data for 15k+ movies from Bokofficemojo’s all-time
domestic list
• Programming language: Python
• Main package: Dash + Plotly for all visualizations, and
interactivity logic
• Data handling: pandas for managing DataFrames and related
operations
• Data import / scraping: requests and BeautifulSoup
• Hosting: Heroku

3. Keep in mind…
• The data are for the domestic box-office in the US,
which is different than the global one (mainly
because this is the biggest list)
• The data re not adjusted for inflation (Gone With
The Wind would be the top movie for example)
• There might be some mergers / acquisitions
between movie studios where knowing about them
would give a clearer picture.

4. • The first part is hopefully intuitively clear
• With the slider above the two charts, you can select the date range that you
want, and you will get the top twenty movies and top twenty movie studios for
the selected date range
• Numbers in parentheses show each movie’s all-time ranking across all movies
in the list
• for example…

8. • The second part shows all movies in one chart
• Gives an immediate visual perspective on when a certain movie(s)
was released and how it did at the box-office
• Mousing over any movie would bring up some additional details
about it; title, all-time rank, lifetime gross, release year, and the studio

9. • you can zoom in horizontally, vertically or in two dimensions to get a
better closer look at a certain year range, gross revenue level, or both

10. • search for movies with the search box, which
supports searching for any word in the title, or any
part of a word

11. • Narrow your search to look only for movies produced by
a certain studio (or more)
• Once that is selected, the movies would be filtered to
only be ones by that studio (the all-time ranking number
remains to give an indication on how each did, compared
to all other movies)

17. • Jurassic Park / World
