When needing to source Database events into Apache Kafka, the JDBC source connector usually represents the first choice for its flexibility and the almost-zero setup required on the database side. But sometimes simplicity comes at the cost of accuracy and missing events can have catastrophic impacts on our data pipelines.
In this session we'll understand how the JDBC source connector works and explore the various modes it can operate to load data in a bulk or incremental manner. Having covered the basics, we'll analyse the edge cases causing things to go wrong like infrequent snapshot times, out of order events, non-incremental sequences or hard deletes.
Finally we'll look at other approaches, like the Debezium source connector, and demonstrate how some more configuration on the database side helps avoid problems and sets up a reliable source of events for our streaming pipeline.

Since June 2016, Flink-as-a-service has been available to researchers and companies in Sweden from the Swedish ICT SICS Data Center at www.hops.site using the HopsWorks platform. Flink applications can be either deployed as jobs (batch or streaming) or written and run directly from Apache Zeppelin on YARN. Flink applications are run within a project on a YARN cluster with the novel property that Flink applications are metered and charged to projects. Projects are also securely isolated from each other and include support for project-specific Kafka topics that are protected from access by users that are not members of the project. Hopsworks is entirely UI-driven, is open-source, and Flink applications that include Kafka topics can be created in a few mouse clicks. In this talk we will discuss the challenges in building a metered version of Flink-as-a-Service for YARN, experiences with Flink-on-YARN, and some of the possibilities that Hopsworks opens up for building secure, multi-ten

As such, the data mesh addresses the most common weaknesses of the traditional centralized data lake or data platform architecture. And the heart of a data mesh infrastructure must be real-time, decoupled, reliable, and scalable.
This presentation explores how Apache Kafka, as an open and scalable decentralized real-time platform, can be the basis of a data mesh infrastructure and - complemented by many other data platforms like a data warehouse, data lake, and lakehouse - solve real business problems.
There is no silver bullet or single technology/product/cloud service for implementing a data mesh. The key outcome of a data mesh architecture is the ability to build data products; with the right tool for the job.
A good data mesh combines data streaming technology like Apache Kafka or Confluent Cloud with cloud-native data warehouse and data lake architectures from Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, et al.

Distributed tracing allows requests to be tracked across multiple services in a distributed system. The Jaeger distributed tracing system was used with the HOTROD sample application to visualize and analyze the request flow. Key aspects like latency bottlenecks and non-parallel processing were identified. Traditional logs lack the request context provided by distributed tracing.
Apache Storm
This document provides an introduction to Apache Storm and real-time big data analytics. It discusses how Storm can be used for processing real-time streaming data, as batch processing is not suitable. The three key points are:
1) Storm is an open source framework for real-time processing of streaming data. It uses spouts and bolts to distribute work across a cluster.
2) Real-time analytics are needed in many domains like social media, SaaS, and financial services to take immediate actions.
3) The Lambda architecture combines batch and real-time processing to always serve the latest data through merging batch and real-time views.
Moving From Actions & Behaviors to Microservices
My DevCon 2019 talk discusses how to make it easier to integrate Alfresco with other systems using an event-based approach. Two real world examples are discussed and demonstrated. The first is about reporting against Alfresco metadata. The second is about enriching metadata by running content through a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model. Both solutions work by listening to generic events generated by Alfresco and placed on an Apache Kafka queue. For the reporting example, the Spring Boot consumer subscribes to Kafka events, then fetches metadata via CMIS and indexes that into Elasticsearch. For the NLP example, a separate Spring Boot consumer subscribes to the same events, but in this case, fetches the content, extracts text using Apache Tika, runs the text through Apache OpenNLP, then writes back extracted entities to Alfresco via CMIS. These are relatively simple examples, but illustrate how a de-coupled, asynchronous, event-based approach can make integrating Alfresco with other systems easier.

Streams, Tables, and Time in KSQL

KSQL is the Streaming SQL engine for Apache Kafka that allows for continuous data stream processing. While KSQL looks very similar to SQL, it provides quite different semantics. First, KSQL queries can be defined over data streams, not just tables. Second, queries over tables are no snapshot queries, but run forever. And third, time is a core concept in KSQL and data stream processing in general. In this talk, we explore the nature of Streaming SQL and its temporal semantics that apply to both streams and tables. We will explain continuous queries semantics, the relationship between streams and tables, and demystify the temporal nature of KSQL tables. Furthermore, we dig into filter, aggregation, and join operations over stream and tables as well as stream specific operators like windowing. At the end, you will be equipped to query streams and tables using KSQL and understand their temporal relationship to each other.

They faced issues with their legacy APIs including complex authentication, poorly designed resources and payloads, and lack of security controls. They wanted to adopt a microservices architecture and serverless approach using AWS API Gateway for standardized interfaces, automated operations, and better monitoring. When adopting API Gateway, 91APP considered factors like architecture visibility, integration with existing systems, minimal customer changes, URL planning, authentication, development processes, monitoring, and maintenance. They saw API Gateway and microservices as enabling an "API economy" approach to monetize and control API usage based on usage plans, keys, quotas and other features.

For the reporting example, the Spring Boot consumer subscribes to Kafka events, then fetches metadata via CMIS and indexes that into Elasticsearch. For the NLP example, a separate Spring Boot consumer subscribes to the same events, but in this case, fetches the content, extracts text using Apache Tika, runs the text through Apache OpenNLP, then writes back extracted entities to Alfresco via CMIS. These are relatively simple examples, but illustrate how a de-coupled, asynchronous, event-based approach can make integrating Alfresco with other systems easier.

Allowing you to focus on your business logic, rather than low level messaging protocols, and transports. You will also hear what other features Camel provides out of the box, which can make integration much easier for you.
We look into web console tooling that allows you to get insight into your running Apache Camel applications, which has among others visual route diagrams with tracing/debugging and profiling capabilities. In addition to the web tooling we will also show you other tools in the making.

Streams, Tables, and Time in KSQL

KSQL is the Streaming SQL engine for Apache Kafka that allows for continuous data stream processing. While KSQL looks very similar to SQL, it provides quite different semantics. First, KSQL queries can be defined over data streams, not just tables. Second, queries over tables are no snapshot queries, but run forever. And third, time is a core concept in KSQL and data stream processing in general. In this talk, we explore the nature of Streaming SQL and its temporal semantics that apply to both streams and tables. We will explain continuous queries semantics, the relationship between streams and tables, and demystify the temporal nature of KSQL tables. Furthermore, we dig into filter, aggregation, and join operations over stream and tables as well as stream specific operators like windowing. At the end, you will be equipped to query streams and tables using KSQL and understand their temporal relationship to each other.

91APP is a leading e-commerce solutions provider in Taiwan. They faced issues with their legacy APIs including complex authentication, poorly designed resources and payloads, and lack of security controls. They wanted to adopt a microservices architecture and serverless approach using AWS API Gateway for standardized interfaces, automated operations, and better monitoring. When adopting API Gateway, 91APP considered factors like architecture visibility, integration with existing systems, minimal customer changes, URL planning, authentication, development processes, monitoring, and maintenance. They saw API Gateway and microservices as enabling an "API economy" approach to monetize and control API usage based on usage plans, keys, quotas and other features.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
