A 2017 incident at Fort Hare University involved a female student being gang raped by three men after a dance, demonstrating the prevalence of gender-based violence in South Africa.

It is the job of organizations like USAID to recognize victims of gender based violence and take a stand against it, in order to promote rights and stop its negative impacts on development. USAID works to increase awareness, improve victim services, and strengthen prevention.

These rates have already eclipsed the 30% lifetime rate of Vietnam vets. The rise is attributed to longer, more frequent combat tours nearly 96% survival rate of seriously injured combatants due to advances in battlefield medicine Protective gear, kevlar, advances in (preserves life, but does not negate internal injuries)
