Kariuki is a village boy who initially believes that white people are superior to Black people and that village boys are at the bottom of the social hierarchy. However, after something happens to change his life, Kariuki begins to fight for his freedom, rights, and friendship. The book shows Kariuki's identity changing as he becomes less fearful of white people and his parents, gains more confidence in who he is, and develops his first friendship with the Mzungu boy Nigel.

2. General Question-Consider the main character: what does he or she believe in? What is he or she willing to fight for? Kariuki who is a village boy. He believes that all Black People are lower than white people. He also believes that white people only eat sweet things. He belivesthat village boys are at the bottom of the village apart from dogs. He is a very brave character. Something in the book happens that causes his life to change. Kariuki is willing to fight for his freedom, rights and what you see most of in this book is friendship.

3. Related to Africa-What have you leaned about the lives of African people from reading this book? I have learnt that all African people look up to white people. They are all scared of them to. I think that it is one of their weaknesses because if they were not so scared I think that the white people would not have done all the things that they did. I have also learnt about there life style. For example Ugali is a type of bread that they eat and Kariuki was so surprised that Nigel (The Mzungu Boy) ate it because he thinks that white people only eat sweetened things. Also I learned that there huts are small and thatchedand they don’t have very much stuff.

4. Related to Outcomes- Where in this novel do you see a person’s identity change through their development? In this novel towards the middle and the end you slowly see Kariuki’s identity change in multiple ways. The first is that he is not so scared of white people in the end. The second is he has his first friend andhe has never had one before. He is not as scared of his parents anymore. And he has a better relationship with his Dad He also got more confident about who he is and his purpose in the village.
