Purpose of tonight’s meeting
To present the process for determining an
attendance zone for the new southwest
elementary school
Southwest Elementary School
 Undesignated school from the 2004 Bond
Program
 Current Clayton attendance area projected to
have 1,553 elementary students by 2012-13
 Scheduled to open for 2010-11 school year
 Built as a 32-classroom school with a
permanent capacity 704 elementary students
 Opening enrollment target – 75% of
permanent capacity, or 528 elementary
students

Facilitator
An independent third-party facilitator,
Patti Summerville of TateAustinHahn,
has been engaged to support a fair,
open and inclusive process to assist the
group to make a recommendation to the
Board of Trustees and the
Superintendent.
FUBTF Core Membership
 Ten members representing AISD
community
 Appointed by Board of Trustees and
Superintendent
 Serve multiple years
 Provide continuity and District-wide
perspective
FUBTF Geographic Members
 Two from each school involved
 Selected by Campus Advisory Committee
(CAC)
 Convey interests and concerns of the
school community to the Task Force
 Represent school community and balance
the needs of District as a whole
 Inform their school community of the Task
Force’s discussions and decisions

 Board relies on FUBTF to recommend
boundary changes
 The FUBTF is charged with the responsibility
to prepare a recommendation for the
attendance zone for the Southwest
Elementary School and to address over-
crowding and under-utilized schools in the
area
 The process has not started yet – no
proposals tonight
 Orientation for the FUBTF – October 13, 2009
 Process is projected to be completed by
February 2010
Criteria*
 Achieve capacity targets that ensure
efficient operation of facilities
 Affect the fewest students possible
 Attend to the alignment of feeder patterns,
as reasonable, and balanced against the
other criteria
 Prevent multiple reassignment of students
among schools by developing stable, long-
term assignment plans
* The criteria for the FUBTF are under Board
review and are projected to be approved on
