Cancer development is a multi-step process that occurs over many years as normal cells accumulate genetic and epigenetic changes that promote tumor growth. These changes include activation of oncogenes and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. The accumulation of multiple genetic and epigenetic alterations is required for a cell to acquire the hallmarks of cancer and form malignant tumors.
