This document summarizes the current knowledge about cognitive impairment as an extrapulmonary feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It discusses that COPD is increasingly seen as a disorder with both physical lung effects and effects on the brain, including impaired psychological and cognitive functioning. Patients with COPD may have cognitive impairment in domains such as information processing, attention, memory, executive functioning, and self-control. Possible causes are hypoxemia, hypercapnia, exacerbations, decreased physical activity, and structural brain abnormalities induced by smoking. Cognitive impairment can negatively impact daily life and disease management for COPD patients.
