Black buck and cheetah - a corporate message
1. The black buck, a species of an antelope is considered to be one of the fastest runners
among animal kingdom. The black buck is reported to outrun cheetah in its running
speed.
But often the fastest running animal – the black buck, falls prey to cheetah and other
predatory animals in the jungle. One may wonder how an animal with such great power
to run is getting caught by other animals those obviously do not have such speed to
chase. The important management message hidden between the ‘black buck and
cheetah’, the corporate leaders must learn.
The black buck when finds a cheetah after it, runs to save its life whereas the cheetah
runs after a black buck to fills its hunger. The corporate people and especially the
people from the HR function must get the right management message from the above.
Two group of people generally exists in most corporate viz.,
1. Fear centric people
2. Passion (hunger) centric people
The fear centric people always attempt to save their life in corporate world. Whenever
there is an issue and whether they are related to the issue or not, these group of people
by default get jittery and attempts to save their life (job). The talent, scholarly
knowledge, intelligence or experience of these people goes defunct to their fear
oriented ‘need’ to save life. It is like the black buck, despite having great speed in
running, succumbs to its predator because it runs to save its life than exploiting its
talents to run at great speed, fully. If the black buck runs with confidence, cheetah may
not reach or match a black buck ever in its life.
On the contrary, the passion (hunger) centric people make their achievements easily in
the corporate world. They never worry about their limitations or about the talents and
uniqueness of the opponents with whom they compete. Only their inner hunger drives
them to success.
The nature has always shown many ways and means to the ‘hungry’ species to be
successful. The evolution and species diversity in nature itself is deeply located only in
the ‘tenet’ of ‘hungry one achieves the best’.
Instead of attempting to save your life every then and there, listen to your hunger and
respect it. Let the life not be defined or dominated by ‘fear’ but allow the ‘abysmal
hunger’ (passion) to rule and dictate the life.
The management message between a black buck and its predator has great relevance
for the corporate people. When one highlights about ones knowledge, experience,
2. intelligence etc., at different occasions in the corporate, one should learn to operate
from the domain of ‘passion’ and not from ‘fear’.
It is not, others strength or capability is going to limit your success, only your passion,
commitment, effort and self belief make your dream come true.
