Foreword

ā€œSometimes a social media or communications platform comes
along that sets a new standard or changes the scene forever.
Just think Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or YouTube.
Blab may just be one of those game changing platforms.
That's why we thought it was vital to create this eBook as your
essential guide to making the most of Blab right now.
This is the first edition of our guide, and given that Blab is still in
beta, we plan to update this as regularly as is needed.
What's great about the Blab team, is that they are actively engaged
in conversation with its users on a daily basis. They are making
changes on the fly, which means the user interface is continually
evolving, and it just gets better every day!
My thanks goes to Stephen Thomas for authoring this guide and to
those industry experts who have reviewed it and given us their
input, ideas, and endorsementā€.

ā€œBlab is about being in the community, about
being part of it, not just talking at and to an
audience. It's a much more collaborative, real-
time, authentic platform than webinars.ā€

Somewhere between a traditional Social Media platform
and a Webinar/Video Chat App, Blab has taken a novel
approach to fill a gap in the market. Available from your
desktop or as an App. Blab have been pushing to be
available anywhere, any time.
To break out of the traditional webinar format Blab gives a
more free-form feel, encouraging interaction from their
viewers. Blab allows 2-4 people to take part in a video
conversation which is broadcast to anyone that wants to
watch. Blab allows for 'hot-seating' which means people
can jump in and out of the video conversation.
Emphasis on people jumping in and out of the
conversation also keeps things fresh and moving. If you've
ever been in a teleconference with too many people then
you'll know what an arduous process they can be.
Similarly, trying to ask long winded or technical questions
via chat functions in webinars can become very tedious.
Blab has a built in recording function that means saving
and sharing your Blabs or the Blabs of other people that
you enjoyed is simple and intuitive. No need to mess
around with screen recording software and worry about
multiple audio inputs, a simple click of one button and
you've got up to 6 hours of your Blab ready to watch any
time.

To start viewing Blabs, commenting and even jumping in the hot-seats takes
no more than a minute. Just sign up to Blab using your Twitter account and
you can start!
To help you get the most out of Blab, whatever your reason for using it,
we've put together this concise guide covering every aspect of Blab for you.
We learned a lot from just jumping into Blabs and seeing what's happening
and we'd encourage you to do the same once you finish this guide.

What is Blab?
Blab is the brainchild of Michael Birch, founder of the Social Networking site
Bebo. A predecessor to Facebook and Google+, Bebo had significant
success in the era of MySpace but floundered and failed after Facebook and
Twitter began to rise to prominence. Michael Birch sold Bebo for hundreds
of millions of dollars before it's decline. He has now bought back into the
business to totally revamp it with Blab.
Blab combines the best elements of a few existing services, mainly
Periscope and Google Hangouts. It provides a uniquely interactive video
chatting platform. Viewers join the livestream and can watch it as on any
other service. What's great about Blab though is the hotseating feature.
There are 4 seats open in the conversation.
A continuously developing
platform, Blab has given
it's users and fans a huge
amount of creative input
to the software. Members
of the the development
and marketing teams can
regularly be found
participating in Blabs
which has helped give a
real community feel to the
project.

On Cam
Etiquette
ļ¬Make sure your audio and video are of acceptable quality before you
ask to be in a hot-seat. Generally speaking you should be using a
headset of some sort unless you have a stand-alone mic, webcam mics
tend to pick up a lot of background noise!
ļ¬Never Blab and drive!
ļ¬Have some idea what to say. It can be tempting to jump in to just get
involved, but unless you've got something to add let someone else
have the seat.
Here are some general rules to abide
by when joining a Blab as a guest
ļ¬Be polite! Thank the host and other guests when appropriate,
don't talk over people and most of all look interested! It's very
obvious when people are there only to speak and not to listen.
This is Social Media, a conversation. Don't make it all about
you!
ļ¬Allow the Host to lead the discussion as appropriate.
Props are how you show appreciation
on Blab. The two handed icon is an
adaptation of the popular 'giving praise'
emoji. You can give Props to speakers
by clicking the symbol in the bottom left
of their speaker pane.

Setting Up
Your Profile
Your profile picture should be a semi-professional headshot or something to do with
your branding. Blab is a great place to show off a bit of your personality so don't feel
like your profile picture has to be as serious as the kind of thing you'd use on LinkedIn.
However it pays to remember that this is going to be seen by a lot of people hopefully
and may shape people's opinion of you.
Next up is the bio. This is the area to use to give a short description of yourself. It's
automatically populated with your Twitter bio, but you can edit it at any time. Key
things to include are your expertise, interests and a link to your website.
As your Blab is linked closely with your Twitter you should make sure your Twitter is
properly set up to represent your personal or professional brand.
The Essential Introduction to Twitter For Business
Your profile page will show your scheduled Blabs, recorded Blabs, your followers and
the people you are following. It will also show the amount of replays your Blabs have
had.
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com

Setting Up Your
Profile
You can view the people you are following by clicking on your profile. Those that
you are following will have the big purple box seen below. Those that also follow
you will have a small grey box saying this on their profile card.
On your 'Followers' tab you'll see people who have chosen to follow you. If you
don't yet follow them there will be a Follow button rather than the purple
'Following' box.

Finding &
Watching Blabs
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Finding &
Watching Blabs
Blab has a 'Tags' section on the left of the home screen
which will allow you to find Blabs that are Live, Scheduled
or have already happened and are available for replay.
Using these tags you can find content in areas that
interest you. If a Blab is scheduled you can click the
Subscribe button to receive updates about it and a
notification before it goes Live.
On the homepage there will always be some 'On-Air'
Blabs you can dive into on a wide variety of topics. It's
not uncommon to see a product demo next to a film
discussion.
If you're looking for a person or Blab in particular there is
a search function and you can find your desired content
using keywords.
If you're watching a Blab live then you can utilise the Chat
feature, Props and all of the other interface options. If
you're watching a Replay then you can see the historical
Chat and who viewed the Blab when it was live, you
won't however see the 'Props' given and received.

This is an example of what the Home screen will look like by
default.
1 ā€“ The 'Tag' function, click on these tags to find related content.
Each Blab can have up to 3 Tags
2 ā€“ The Search-bar, use this to find particular users or Blabs
3 ā€“ Choose between live Blabs, those that are scheduled for
some time in the future or Blabs that have already been recorded
4 ā€“ Start a New Blab, this is the button you press to start setting
up a Blab with yourself as the host
5 ā€“ That title of the Blab along with the contributors is under the
profile pictures of the contributors.

If you're viewing 'Scheduled' Blabs then you'll find a
Subscribe button below them. If you choose to subscribe
you'll get updates on the Blab and a notification before it
begins. After the Blab has finished you will also
automatically be sent a link to the recording in case you
missed some of it.

1. The total number of viewers the Blab has had and
the number of people currently watching live
2. The comment stream, this can be filtered to easily
see only questions or your mentions
3. These are 'Props.' Click the button next to the
number to give Props to a contributor
4. An empty seat, click the Join button to request a
seat in the conversation
5. Tell a Little Bird. Hit this button to send out a Tweet
telling all of your Twitter followers you're in a Blab
and invite them to join

To see who is viewing a Blab you can click on the Profile Pictures along
the top of the screen or on the View counter icons. Everyone that has
viewed the Blab will be in this list and you can use it to find people who
contributed well in the comments section or to connect to like-minded
people.
Use a mention in the chat like you would on Twitter. You can either
manually type '@name' or just click the little grey arrow at the top of the
comment you'd like to reply to. This function is especially useful for
answering questions posed in the Chat or for getting an answer from
someone when the chat gets busy.
You can Favourite a comment in the chat just like you can give 'Props' to
someone in one of the Hotseats, just mouse over the comment and click
on the star that appears next to the reply arrow.
Use the command '/q' to highlight your comment as a question. This
makes it easier for both the host and everyone in the chat to see.

Ensure you pick an optimised Title for your Blab. Though
you can change the topic throughout the Blab the Title
you pick to start with will be the URL of your Blab and
what you use to promote it.
Follow normal best practice for naming Blog Articles,
Videos, Web Pages etc.
Make the title something that will catch people's attention
and intrigue them. Titles such as
'Ten Things You Need To Know About Blab'
And
'How To Ruin Your Businesses Reputation in 24 Hours'
Work much better than
'Talking About Blab'
And
'Business Reputation Management'

Congratulations! You've scheduled your first Blab. You'll be taken to a
countdown screen. Simply come back a few minutes before the Blab is
due to start and hit that 'Start Now' button and you'll be Blabbing.
If you want to change the time of your scheduled Blab you can, simply
click the 'Edit' button on the Blab.

Host Abilities
ā€¢ Accept Callers into Hotseats ā€“ It's up to you who gets to
speak, remember to invite people to fill seats when it's
appropriate
ā€¢ Kick Callers ā€“ You brought them into this Blab, you can
take them back out too! People will normally vacate the
seat on their own but you may need to Kick someone if
something unexpected happens or they encounter
technical difficulties
ā€¢ Moderate the Chat ā€“ You can delete comments from the
chat that you deem inappropriate by mousing over them
and clicking the 'Attention' icon
ā€¢ Change the Topic ā€“ Use '/Topic' to change the topic
during the Blab. Useful for when you go off topic or want
to attract new viewers
ā€¢ Ban/Block ā€“ Use this to stop certain people from
interacting with your Blab. They'll still be able to view it
but won't be able to comment or otherwise interact with
your Blab. Click on their Username and there is a 'Block'
option at the top right of their profile card.
ā€¢ Lock Seat ā€“ If you don't want to fill all 4 seats in your
Blab you can choose to lock the seat and this will let
everyone know you're not currently looking to fill it.
ā€¢ Pause Recording ā€“ If your Blab is 'On The Record' you
can stop and start the recording to save on later editing if
you want to use the recording. This comes in useful when
discussing something off topic or are having technical
difficulties.

Page | 24
Host
Responsibilities
ā€¢ Monitor The Chat ā€“ It's often easier to have a co-host or
someone off screen monitoring the comments so you
can stay focussed. You must have someone monitoring
the chat though, to ensure questions are answered and
your viewers feel included.
ā€¢ Be Welcoming ā€“ As host it's your job to make everyone
feel welcome, whether they're in the Hot-seat or just
viewing. Remind people how to ask questions, ask them
questions yourself and make sure the Blab feels like a
conversation not a presentation.
ā€¢ Introduce & Thank Guests ā€“ If you've invited someone
to join your Blab as a special guest make sure you
introduce them, encourage your followers to follow
them and thank them for their input before they leave.
ā€¢ Have A Smooth Show ā€“ Make sure you know the
platform well before you start a Blab. Ensure everything
is running smoothly before the Blab is scheduled to start.
Have some notes on hand so you're never at a loss for
what to say.
ā€¢ Manage The Blab ā€“ As the host the progress of the Blab
is your responsibility. This means managing the guests
and ensuring you talk about what you need to talk
about. Keep things on track and make sure you have
differing opinions or expertise on the Blab where you
can.
ā€¢ Set Ground Rules ā€“ If you want everyone to abide by
certain rules it's good to set them out at the start of the
Blab and remind people of them periodically. For
instance you might want to set a 5 minute limit on the
open seat in the Blab or limit people in the chat to one
question each during a Q&A section of your Blab.

Tips
The more people you have in your Blab, the higher up on
the homepage you'll be. The higher up on the homepage
you are, the more likely you are to be seen by people who
weren't in your mail shot or social circles.
Make sure you encourage people to Subscribe to your
Blab when you're doing your Social Media promotion.
Along with your own reminders this will help ensure they
don't forget to attend.
You don't have to pick 3 Tags for your Blab, but do if you
can. You shouldn't add unnecessary or untrue Tags to your
Blab as this hurts your credibility and people are likely to
jump in and straight back out again if you're not talking
about what they thought you were.
Consider different time-zones. If you're looking to get an
international audience you'll have to think carefully about
when you schedule your Blab.
Have some easy to answer questions prepared to ask your
audience to get people active earlier in the Blab, this helps
to keep them interested throughout the Blab. For instance
ask how many Blabs they've already been in, or who their
favourite Blabber is.
Periodically ask the viewers in your Blab to follow you and
your guests. Remind them to give Props when they're
enjoying what a speaker is saying or agree with them.

Page | 26
Ending Your
Blab
Depending on the format of your Blab you may have a
set finish time or decide to run until a natural stopping
point occurs. If you have set a finish time then stick to it,
if you're asking professionals to give up their time to
participate in your Blab you have to respect their time
constraints. In our experience people leaving a Blab
halfway through are less likely to come back and finish it
than someone who missed it completely but subscribed
to it.
If you think you're going to run over then you can
schedule a follow-up Blab on the fly and record it.
Alternatively you can 'Pass The Torch' whereby you invite
your audience to move over to another Blab session with
another host. The discussion can continue but people
won't feel obligated to stay or put out by an over-running
session.
To end the Blab ensure you've kicked all of the other
people in Seats and then close the Blab. You must ensure
everyone is kicked from their seats as the Blab will
continue if there is anyone in a seat regardless of whether
they were the original host
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 27
Your Blab
Recording
Once you've finished your Blab you'll receive your recording in 3 versions.
ā€¢ Raw Audio
ā€¢ Raw Video
ā€¢ Embed Code
Don't worry about pausing your recording during the live Blab, the Blab will
still come to you as a single, continuous recording.
In your Replay tab there is an option to upload your recording directly to
Youtube. Though some of you may want to do this it's important to remember
that your Blab might be a great piece of content for your Content Marketing
and as such you might not want it on Youtube where you can't track who's
watching it and where they came from.
If you decide you'd like to leverage your Blab recording as premium content
and put it on your website behind a form or something similar you can simply
go to the Replay tab and click the small eye icon at the top right of the
recording. If you want to make it public again you simply have to click the eye
icon again.
Monitor the chat on your Replays,
people can still comment on Replays.
Try to answer new questions and
engage with those watching your
Replays to maximise your gains from
Blabbing.

Promotion
Promoting your Blab is important, more viewers is never a
bad thing. More audience members means you will have
more participation and generate more buzz around what
you're saying.
Promote your Blab on Social Media. Hopefully you should
already have a good following on Twitter, Facebook,
LinkedIn and any other social networks you use. Follow all
of your normal best practices when sharing information
about your Blab. Make sure you tell people what it's about,
when it is and why they should be there.
Two good ways to increase your Social Media promotion
success!
1.Create a custom graphic for your Social Media posts.
Social Media posts with an image attached get much
higher engagement rates. A custom graphic with the
profile pictures of your speakers, the time, date and topic
is simple to create with a program like Canva.
2.Pose a question or thought provoking comment with
your updates and invites. If people have an answer they
want to give, or want to hear the answer they're more
likely to get engaged both before and during the Blab.
Invite people to send you their ideas or responses and
promise the 3 most interesting ones a 5 minute slot in
your Blab.
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 29
Promotion
Leverage your normal email lists as you would for any
other Webinar or similar event.
Getting involved with the Blab community is a great tool
for the promotion of your own Blabs. If you get a seat in a
relevant Blab then you can mention that you are hosting
your own on a similar topic, if it's appropriate. Don't just
join Blabs to plug your own, that becomes obvious very
quickly and is considered bad form.
Having a regular schedule and an associated Hashtag for
Twitter can help with organic promotion.

Why Blab?
A study conducted last year found that 84%* of Millenials
(18-32) don't trust advertisements and that for the
majority of them, friends or review sites were the go to
place to find a trusted recommendation 88% of Millenials
get at least a portion of their news from Social Media.
What this means for marketers is you need to engage
your audience more than ever. Passive Display Ads might
get you some brand recognition but they're not going to
get people talking about you. Have you ever seen a
banner ad that's got you excited enough to talk to a
friend about it? I don't think I have for a very, very long
time.
Blab is a platform that can really give you a way to
engage directly with your customers but in a medium that
everyone can see. Messaging people on Twitter can give
you exposure and keep your great customer service out
in the open. But who really follows Twitter
conversations? Not casual customers, that's for sure.
Youtube videos with Q&As can be a good way to answer
customer questions, but they don't feel interactive.
Podcasts suffer from the same problem.

Ways to use Blab
Customer Q & A/ Outreach ā€“ The ability for customers and
fans to jump into the hotseat and have a 2-5 minute
discussion with a real person is a great way to make them
feel valued and can clear up questions much quicker than
email correspondence. Ensure you have a good co-host and
remember you can go 'off the record' if you need to.
Expert Interviews ā€“ There already hundreds of experts from
all walks of life on Blab. It's so simple to use that bringing
new experts in to Blab to interview is also easy to do.
Having the conversation in front of viewers and interacting
with them gives the interview a much greater feeling of
authenticity.
Product Demos ā€“ Useful for single product demos to
particular clients or showing off your product in general.
Using multiple Blab accounts you can show multiple angles
of the product or have other forms of multiple display.
News/Podcasts ā€“ A very popular form of Blab, a regular
show where-in one talks about their industry, related
products and issues. Remember the key in these is to be
informative, don't only talk about yourself and your
business.
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 32
Why Are You
Blabbing?
The Blab platform can be used in a whole host of
different ways. From customer service and expert
interviews to industry updates & insight video
conferences. You need to decide on your Blab strategy
going forward and have a clear goal in mind for each of
your Blab sessions.
If you want to discuss industry issues then keep to topic,
invite the right kinds of people to speak and have a loose
agenda to kick things off. If you want to create a weekly
podcast using Blab then you can keep things more
freeform, but understand what your goal for that action
is. A lot of people are hearing about Blab and jumping in
at the deep end with no clear strategy or end goal.
While this isn't necessarily bad you're not going to be
getting the most out of it for the time you invest. Treat
Blab like any other Social Media you use for business and
create a plan.
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 33
Get Social!
Getting noticed isn't hard to do on Blab as it stands. You
can already get free exposure through the frontpage and
the tag system makes it easy to find the content you're
looking for.
Blab is a Social Media platform however, so the best way
to get people to see you is to interact. One of the easiest
ways to do this is to find Blabs relevant to you and offer
your valuable insights.
When people see you contributing they can just click
your handle to find out more about you. I've personally
followed dozens of people already based on their
contributions in other people's Blabs.
Don't be afraid to ask for a spot in the
'Hot-seat' on a Blab if you know you've
got something to contribute!
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 34
Be relaxed, but
not too relaxed
There's some disagreement around this point. However I
feel it's an important distinction for most brands and
professionals to make. Because of the ad-hoc nature of
jumping into a Blab people often aren't totally prepared to
be on screen. Many people appreciate the more
approachable, less-professional aspect of Blab, it feels like
you're talking to the person rather than their brand.
However this is an area you should be careful around. Just
as you wouldn't have your Facebook display picture as you
in some unprofessional situation you should be careful
about the image you present on Blab.
This doesn't mean you need to be in a suit and tie every
time you Blab, but just that you should be aware of your
surroundings and situation if you're jumping into the 'Hot-
seat.' I've seen a lot of US based people jump into Blabs
while they're driving which could be illegal in the UK.
Equally rowdy friends in the background or just
inappropriate attire can reflect badly on you and your
brand. As most Blabs are being recorded this could hurt
you in the future. It is certainly worth writing Blab into your
Social Media Policy when you get the chance if it's going to
be an avenue you see you and your staff taking advantage
of.
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 35
Get involved with
the right people
You can have a Blab where it's just you talking, but that's
not going to be all that interesting for the viewers. If you
want to get a good discussion flowing then you need to
have the right people involved in your Blab. Think about
what you're going to be talking about and who will add to
the conversation. A panel of experts can be a great way
to start. Some of the best Blabs I've been in have had
people of differing levels of expertise talking about a
subject, this can help organic questions come out and
makes the whole broadcast feel less scripted.
The 'Hot-seat' feature means you can invite dozens of
people to speak and cycle through them as you broadcast
so don't be afraid to make the most of this. Having people
come in, give their '2 cents' and vacate their seat so the
next person can contribute keeps the conversation
flowing. This means people who are waiting their turn will
really engage with the people before them, rather than
just passively sitting back as they might if they weren't
going to get to speak.
Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
Page | 36
Have a Blab
level plan
To make the most out of your
Blab it's always good to have an
idea of what you want to talk
about beforehand. If you're
discussing with experts or industry
insiders then it's also good for
them to know so they can prep
their questions and answers.
Sending a quick email with the key
discussion points or topics will
help inform subscribers and fans
so they can come fully prepared
too.
You don't have to stick rigidly to
this but it'll help keep your
audience qualified and interested.
It can also help to rein everyone in
when the Blab goes off topic, as
happens quite often, especially
when you have people jumping in
and out of the conversation.
Sending out a preparation email
can also help you get a list of
semi-vetted contributors ready to
jump into the conversation. Have
them let you know they'd like to
be a part of the conversation and
you can invite them in to speak at
certain points to break up the
expert discussion.
This kind of planning works
especially well when you want to
use the Blab footage later as a
podcast or something along those
lines. Along with this you should
schedule your Blabs within the
platform as this will send out
automatic Tweets when you're
starting and send Push
notifications to App users.

Follow-up
At the end of a Blab remember to thank your
contributors. If it's appropriate add them on your other
social networks and begin to take your normal
relationship nurturing steps. If you're using Blab for
Marketing and Lead Generation then just broadcasting is
only going to go so far. When is there going to be a
better time to get connected to someone than after
you've just finished talking to them? Ask people for their
comments, feedback and suggestions.
Your Blabs shouldn't be one off broadcasts. You want
your viewers and contributors to keep coming back every
time you broadcast. Keep them enthused by giving a look
forward at the end of your Blabs or in your follow up
emails. Give them hints about your next big guest or
some other reason to come back next time. Setting out a
schedule for your fans to know about will help to keep
viewership high and also encourages them to share your
future events with other people who might be interested.
If you've finished with some unanswered questions or
pressing discussion points then use this to your
advantage, schedule a follow-up Blab soon after. This will
give you a second bite at the cherry and helps you see
how engaged your audience really were.

Know your stuff
before you host
Blab's UI is very intuitive, but it pays to spend a few
minutes getting to grip with everything before you dive
into a Blab head first. When you're watching someone
speak or are in a Blab you can give them 'Props' by clicking
the little icon in the bottom right of their pane. These
accumulate over the course of the Blab but disappear
afterwards. It's a good way to show that you're
appreciating what the speaker is saying but the fact that
they're short lived means they won't become some ego-
point people can wave about on the site.
In the chat type '/Q' to have your comment tagged as a
question so it's more obvious to the people hosting the
Blab. When you're hosting a Blab type '/Topic' to change
the topic. Doing this as you move over different topics can
get you more interest from people searching for certain
kinds of content.
Make sure you know all of the relevant commands and
interface options so you can help out those in your Blab if
they run into simple problems like not knowing how to
highlight their question.

Page | 39
Use your Blabs
in your content
marketing
Blab allows you to record up to 6 hours in one session.
This is free video content for your Content Marketing! If
you're the host then once a Blab finishes if you've set it to
record you'll be emailed a video file, a separate audio file
and an embed code. So now you can put all that great
information you shared up on your website, two birds one
stone!
You can pause the recording function during a Blab if you
get off topic and start it up again once you're back on
course. Make sure you select the record option at the start
because if you don't the Blab is lost and you can't retrieve
it. Blabs are saved on the site when they're recorded and
anyone can watch them via the replay function.
So this means if you want your Blab to be a one off, 'off
the record' so to speak you should ensure that it's not
being recorded as these recordings are all public.

powerful tool for Marketing, Customer Relations or
any one of a multitude of other possible uses of it.

please don't hesitate to contact us.

Blab 1st edition

  • 2. Rob Thomas Social Selling and LinkedIn Expert, Business Coach, Keynote Speaker with WSI & G5 Page | 2 Foreword Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com ā€œSometimes a social media or communications platform comes along that sets a new standard or changes the scene forever. Just think Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or YouTube. Blab may just be one of those game changing platforms. That's why we thought it was vital to create this eBook as your essential guide to making the most of Blab right now. This is the first edition of our guide, and given that Blab is still in beta, we plan to update this as regularly as is needed. What's great about the Blab team, is that they are actively engaged in conversation with its users on a daily basis. They are making changes on the fly, which means the user interface is continually evolving, and it just gets better every day! My thanks goes to Stephen Thomas for authoring this guide and to those industry experts who have reviewed it and given us their input, ideas, and endorsementā€.
  • 3. Jill Rowley Social Selling Evangelist & Modern Marketing Expert ā€œBlab is about being in the community, about being part of it, not just talking at and to an audience. It's a much more collaborative, real- time, authentic platform than webinars.ā€ Page | 3 Industry Expert Opinions Olga Andrienko Communications and Social Media Lead - SEMrush ā€œI love and keep exploring Blab. We utilize it for customer service. We talked to clients and jumped on a Blab with them, the feedback was great!ā€ Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Dan Monaghan Co-Founder of WSI, worlds largest Digital Agency Network ā€œEngaging with your audience is just as important as having a website in 2015, Blab is providing an exciting new way to get face to face with customers & potential clientsā€

  • 5. Somewhere between a traditional Social Media platform and a Webinar/Video Chat App, Blab has taken a novel approach to fill a gap in the market. Available from your desktop or as an App. Blab have been pushing to be available anywhere, any time. To break out of the traditional webinar format Blab gives a more free-form feel, encouraging interaction from their viewers. Blab allows 2-4 people to take part in a video conversation which is broadcast to anyone that wants to watch. Blab allows for 'hot-seating' which means people can jump in and out of the video conversation. Emphasis on people jumping in and out of the conversation also keeps things fresh and moving. If you've ever been in a teleconference with too many people then you'll know what an arduous process they can be. Similarly, trying to ask long winded or technical questions via chat functions in webinars can become very tedious. Blab has a built in recording function that means saving and sharing your Blabs or the Blabs of other people that you enjoyed is simple and intuitive. No need to mess around with screen recording software and worry about multiple audio inputs, a simple click of one button and you've got up to 6 hours of your Blab ready to watch any time. • 6. To start viewing Blabs, commenting and even jumping in the hot-seats takes no more than a minute. Just sign up to Blab using your Twitter account and you can start! To help you get the most out of Blab, whatever your reason for using it, we've put together this concise guide covering every aspect of Blab for you. We learned a lot from just jumping into Blabs and seeing what's happening and we'd encourage you to do the same once you finish this guide. What is Blab? Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 6
  • 7. What is Blab? Blab is the brainchild of Michael Birch, founder of the Social Networking site Bebo. A predecessor to Facebook and Google+, Bebo had significant success in the era of MySpace but floundered and failed after Facebook and Twitter began to rise to prominence. Michael Birch sold Bebo for hundreds of millions of dollars before it's decline. He has now bought back into the business to totally revamp it with Blab. Blab combines the best elements of a few existing services, mainly Periscope and Google Hangouts. It provides a uniquely interactive video chatting platform. Viewers join the livestream and can watch it as on any other service. What's great about Blab though is the hotseating feature. There are 4 seats open in the conversation. A continuously developing platform, Blab has given it's users and fans a huge amount of creative input to the software. Members of the the development and marketing teams can regularly be found participating in Blabs which has helped give a real community feel to the project. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 7
  • 8. On Cam Etiquette ļ¬Make sure your audio and video are of acceptable quality before you ask to be in a hot-seat. Generally speaking you should be using a headset of some sort unless you have a stand-alone mic, webcam mics tend to pick up a lot of background noise! ļ¬Never Blab and drive! ļ¬Have some idea what to say. It can be tempting to jump in to just get involved, but unless you've got something to add let someone else have the seat. Here are some general rules to abide by when joining a Blab as a guest ļ¬Be polite! Thank the host and other guests when appropriate, don't talk over people and most of all look interested! It's very obvious when people are there only to speak and not to listen. This is Social Media, a conversation. Don't make it all about you! ļ¬Allow the Host to lead the discussion as appropriate. Props are how you show appreciation on Blab. The two handed icon is an adaptation of the popular 'giving praise' emoji. You can give Props to speakers by clicking the symbol in the bottom left of their speaker pane. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 8
  • 9. Setting Up Your Profile Your profile picture should be a semi-professional headshot or something to do with your branding. Blab is a great place to show off a bit of your personality so don't feel like your profile picture has to be as serious as the kind of thing you'd use on LinkedIn. However it pays to remember that this is going to be seen by a lot of people hopefully and may shape people's opinion of you. Next up is the bio. This is the area to use to give a short description of yourself. It's automatically populated with your Twitter bio, but you can edit it at any time. Key things to include are your expertise, interests and a link to your website. As your Blab is linked closely with your Twitter you should make sure your Twitter is properly set up to represent your personal or professional brand. The Essential Introduction to Twitter For Business Your profile page will show your scheduled Blabs, recorded Blabs, your followers and the people you are following. It will also show the amount of replays your Blabs have had. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 9
  • 10. Setting Up Your Profile You can view the people you are following by clicking on your profile. Those that you are following will have the big purple box seen below. Those that also follow you will have a small grey box saying this on their profile card. On your 'Followers' tab you'll see people who have chosen to follow you. If you don't yet follow them there will be a Follow button rather than the purple 'Following' box. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 10
  • 11. Finding & Watching Blabs Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
  • 12. Finding & Watching Blabs Blab has a 'Tags' section on the left of the home screen which will allow you to find Blabs that are Live, Scheduled or have already happened and are available for replay. Using these tags you can find content in areas that interest you. If a Blab is scheduled you can click the Subscribe button to receive updates about it and a notification before it goes Live. On the homepage there will always be some 'On-Air' Blabs you can dive into on a wide variety of topics. It's not uncommon to see a product demo next to a film discussion. If you're looking for a person or Blab in particular there is a search function and you can find your desired content using keywords. If you're watching a Blab live then you can utilise the Chat feature, Props and all of the other interface options. If you're watching a Replay then you can see the historical Chat and who viewed the Blab when it was live, you won't however see the 'Props' given and received. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 12
  • 13. This is an example of what the Home screen will look like by default. 1 ā€“ The 'Tag' function, click on these tags to find related content. Everyone that has viewed the Blab will be in this list and you can use it to find people who contributed well in the comments section or to connect to like-minded people. Use a mention in the chat like you would on Twitter. You can either manually type '@name' or just click the little grey arrow at the top of the comment you'd like to reply to. This function is especially useful for answering questions posed in the Chat or for getting an answer from someone when the chat gets busy. You can Favourite a comment in the chat just like you can give 'Props' to someone in one of the Hotseats, just mouse over the comment and click on the star that appears next to the reply arrow. Use the command '/q' to highlight your comment as a question. This makes it easier for both the host and everyone in the chat to see. • 22. Hosting A Blab Ensure you pick an optimised Title for your Blab. Though you can change the topic throughout the Blab the Title you pick to start with will be the URL of your Blab and what you use to promote it. Follow normal best practice for naming Blog Articles, Videos, Web Pages etc. Make the title something that will catch people's attention and intrigue them. Titles such as 'Ten Things You Need To Know About Blab' And 'How To Ruin Your Businesses Reputation in 24 Hours' Work much better than 'Talking About Blab' And 'Business Reputation Management' Copyright Ā©2015 WSI. • 24. Host Abilities ā€¢ Accept Callers into Hotseats ā€“ It's up to you who gets to speak, remember to invite people to fill seats when it's appropriate ā€¢ Kick Callers ā€“ You brought them into this Blab, you can take them back out too! People will normally vacate the seat on their own but you may need to Kick someone if something unexpected happens or they encounter technical difficulties ā€¢ Moderate the Chat ā€“ You can delete comments from the chat that you deem inappropriate by mousing over them and clicking the 'Attention' icon ā€¢ Change the Topic ā€“ Use '/Topic' to change the topic during the Blab. Useful for when you go off topic or want to attract new viewers ā€¢ Ban/Block ā€“ Use this to stop certain people from interacting with your Blab. They'll still be able to view it but won't be able to comment or otherwise interact with your Blab. Click on their Username and there is a 'Block' option at the top right of their profile card. ā€¢ Lock Seat ā€“ If you don't want to fill all 4 seats in your Blab you can choose to lock the seat and this will let everyone know you're not currently looking to fill it. ā€¢ Pause Recording ā€“ If your Blab is 'On The Record' you can stop and start the recording to save on later editing if you want to use the recording. This comes in useful when discussing something off topic or are having technical difficulties. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 24
  • 25. Host Responsibilities ā€¢ Monitor The Chat ā€“ It's often easier to have a co-host or someone off screen monitoring the comments so you can stay focussed. You must have someone monitoring the chat though, to ensure questions are answered and your viewers feel included. ā€¢ Be Welcoming ā€“ As host it's your job to make everyone feel welcome, whether they're in the Hot-seat or just viewing. Remind people how to ask questions, ask them questions yourself and make sure the Blab feels like a conversation not a presentation. ā€¢ Introduce & Thank Guests ā€“ If you've invited someone to join your Blab as a special guest make sure you introduce them, encourage your followers to follow them and thank them for their input before they leave. ā€¢ Have A Smooth Show ā€“ Make sure you know the platform well before you start a Blab. Ensure everything is running smoothly before the Blab is scheduled to start. Have some notes on hand so you're never at a loss for what to say. ā€¢ Manage The Blab ā€“ As the host the progress of the Blab is your responsibility. This means managing the guests and ensuring you talk about what you need to talk about. Keep things on track and make sure you have differing opinions or expertise on the Blab where you can. ā€¢ Set Ground Rules ā€“ If you want everyone to abide by certain rules it's good to set them out at the start of the Blab and remind people of them periodically. For instance you might want to set a 5 minute limit on the open seat in the Blab or limit people in the chat to one question each during a Q&A section of your Blab. Copyright Ā©2015 WSI. • 26. Tips The more people you have in your Blab, the higher up on the homepage you'll be. The higher up on the homepage you are, the more likely you are to be seen by people who weren't in your mail shot or social circles. Make sure you encourage people to Subscribe to your Blab when you're doing your Social Media promotion. Along with your own reminders this will help ensure they don't forget to attend. You don't have to pick 3 Tags for your Blab, but do if you can. You shouldn't add unnecessary or untrue Tags to your Blab as this hurts your credibility and people are likely to jump in and straight back out again if you're not talking about what they thought you were. Consider different time-zones. If you're looking to get an international audience you'll have to think carefully about when you schedule your Blab. Have some easy to answer questions prepared to ask your audience to get people active earlier in the Blab, this helps to keep them interested throughout the Blab. For instance ask how many Blabs they've already been in, or who their favourite Blabber is. Periodically ask the viewers in your Blab to follow you and your guests. Remind them to give Props when they're enjoying what a speaker is saying or agree with them. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 26
  • 27. Ending Your Blab Depending on the format of your Blab you may have a set finish time or decide to run until a natural stopping point occurs. If you have set a finish time then stick to it, if you're asking professionals to give up their time to participate in your Blab you have to respect their time constraints. In our experience people leaving a Blab halfway through are less likely to come back and finish it than someone who missed it completely but subscribed to it. If you think you're going to run over then you can schedule a follow-up Blab on the fly and record it. Alternatively you can 'Pass The Torch' whereby you invite your audience to move over to another Blab session with another host. The discussion can continue but people won't feel obligated to stay or put out by an over-running session. To end the Blab ensure you've kicked all of the other people in Seats and then close the Blab. You must ensure everyone is kicked from their seats as the Blab will continue if there is anyone in a seat regardless of whether they were the original host Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 27
  • 28. Your Blab Recording Once you've finished your Blab you'll receive your recording in 3 versions. ā€¢ Raw Audio ā€¢ Raw Video ā€¢ Embed Code Don't worry about pausing your recording during the live Blab, the Blab will still come to you as a single, continuous recording. In your Replay tab there is an option to upload your recording directly to Youtube. Though some of you may want to do this it's important to remember that your Blab might be a great piece of content for your Content Marketing and as such you might not want it on Youtube where you can't track who's watching it and where they came from. If you decide you'd like to leverage your Blab recording as premium content and put it on your website behind a form or something similar you can simply go to the Replay tab and click the small eye icon at the top right of the recording. If you want to make it public again you simply have to click the eye icon again. Monitor the chat on your Replays, people can still comment on Replays. Try to answer new questions and engage with those watching your Replays to maximise your gains from Blabbing. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 28
  • 29. Promotion Promoting your Blab is important, more viewers is never a bad thing. More audience members means you will have more participation and generate more buzz around what you're saying. Promote your Blab on Social Media. Hopefully you should already have a good following on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and any other social networks you use. Follow all of your normal best practices when sharing information about your Blab. Make sure you tell people what it's about, when it is and why they should be there. Two good ways to increase your Social Media promotion success! 1.Create a custom graphic for your Social Media posts. Social Media posts with an image attached get much higher engagement rates. A custom graphic with the profile pictures of your speakers, the time, date and topic is simple to create with a program like Canva. 2.Pose a question or thought provoking comment with your updates and invites. If people have an answer they want to give, or want to hear the answer they're more likely to get engaged both before and during the Blab. Invite people to send you their ideas or responses and promise the 3 most interesting ones a 5 minute slot in your Blab. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 29
  • 30. Promotion Leverage your normal email lists as you would for any other Webinar or similar event. Getting involved with the Blab community is a great tool for the promotion of your own Blabs. If you get a seat in a relevant Blab then you can mention that you are hosting your own on a similar topic, if it's appropriate. Don't just join Blabs to plug your own, that becomes obvious very quickly and is considered bad form. Having a regular schedule and an associated Hashtag for Twitter can help with organic promotion. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 30
  • 31. Why Blab? A study conducted last year found that 84%* of Millenials (18-32) don't trust advertisements and that for the majority of them, friends or review sites were the go to place to find a trusted recommendation 88% of Millenials get at least a portion of their news from Social Media. What this means for marketers is you need to engage your audience more than ever. Passive Display Ads might get you some brand recognition but they're not going to get people talking about you. Have you ever seen a banner ad that's got you excited enough to talk to a friend about it? I don't think I have for a very, very long time. Blab is a platform that can really give you a way to engage directly with your customers but in a medium that everyone can see. Messaging people on Twitter can give you exposure and keep your great customer service out in the open. But who really follows Twitter conversations? Not casual customers, that's for sure. Youtube videos with Q&As can be a good way to answer customer questions, but they don't feel interactive. Podcasts suffer from the same problem. *Engaging Millennials The McCarthy Group Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 31
  • 32. Ways to use Blab Customer Q & A/ Outreach ā€“ The ability for customers and fans to jump into the hotseat and have a 2-5 minute discussion with a real person is a great way to make them feel valued and can clear up questions much quicker than email correspondence. Ensure you have a good co-host and remember you can go 'off the record' if you need to. Expert Interviews ā€“ There already hundreds of experts from all walks of life on Blab. It's so simple to use that bringing new experts in to Blab to interview is also easy to do. Having the conversation in front of viewers and interacting with them gives the interview a much greater feeling of authenticity. Product Demos ā€“ Useful for single product demos to particular clients or showing off your product in general. Using multiple Blab accounts you can show multiple angles of the product or have other forms of multiple display. News/Podcasts ā€“ A very popular form of Blab, a regular show where-in one talks about their industry, related products and issues. Remember the key in these is to be informative, don't only talk about yourself and your business. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 32
  • 33. Why Are You Blabbing? The Blab platform can be used in a whole host of different ways. From customer service and expert interviews to industry updates & insight video conferences. You need to decide on your Blab strategy going forward and have a clear goal in mind for each of your Blab sessions. If you want to discuss industry issues then keep to topic, invite the right kinds of people to speak and have a loose agenda to kick things off. If you want to create a weekly podcast using Blab then you can keep things more freeform, but understand what your goal for that action is. A lot of people are hearing about Blab and jumping in at the deep end with no clear strategy or end goal. While this isn't necessarily bad you're not going to be getting the most out of it for the time you invest. Treat Blab like any other Social Media you use for business and create a plan. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 33
  • 34. Get Social! Getting noticed isn't hard to do on Blab as it stands. You can already get free exposure through the frontpage and the tag system makes it easy to find the content you're looking for. Blab is a Social Media platform however, so the best way to get people to see you is to interact. One of the easiest ways to do this is to find Blabs relevant to you and offer your valuable insights. When people see you contributing they can just click your handle to find out more about you. I've personally followed dozens of people already based on their contributions in other people's Blabs. Don't be afraid to ask for a spot in the 'Hot-seat' on a Blab if you know you've got something to contribute! Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 34
  • 35. Be relaxed, but not too relaxed There's some disagreement around this point. However I feel it's an important distinction for most brands and professionals to make. Because of the ad-hoc nature of jumping into a Blab people often aren't totally prepared to be on screen. Many people appreciate the more approachable, less-professional aspect of Blab, it feels like you're talking to the person rather than their brand. However this is an area you should be careful around. Just as you wouldn't have your Facebook display picture as you in some unprofessional situation you should be careful about the image you present on Blab. This doesn't mean you need to be in a suit and tie every time you Blab, but just that you should be aware of your surroundings and situation if you're jumping into the 'Hot- seat.' I've seen a lot of US based people jump into Blabs while they're driving which could be illegal in the UK. Equally rowdy friends in the background or just inappropriate attire can reflect badly on you and your brand. As most Blabs are being recorded this could hurt you in the future. It is certainly worth writing Blab into your Social Media Policy when you get the chance if it's going to be an avenue you see you and your staff taking advantage of. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 35
  • 36. Get involved with the right people You can have a Blab where it's just you talking, but that's not going to be all that interesting for the viewers. If you want to get a good discussion flowing then you need to have the right people involved in your Blab. Think about what you're going to be talking about and who will add to the conversation. A panel of experts can be a great way to start. Some of the best Blabs I've been in have had people of differing levels of expertise talking about a subject, this can help organic questions come out and makes the whole broadcast feel less scripted. The 'Hot-seat' feature means you can invite dozens of people to speak and cycle through them as you broadcast so don't be afraid to make the most of this. Having people come in, give their '2 cents' and vacate their seat so the next person can contribute keeps the conversation flowing. This means people who are waiting their turn will really engage with the people before them, rather than just passively sitting back as they might if they weren't going to get to speak. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 36
  • 37. Have a Blab level plan To make the most out of your Blab it's always good to have an idea of what you want to talk about beforehand. If you're discussing with experts or industry insiders then it's also good for them to know so they can prep their questions and answers. Sending a quick email with the key discussion points or topics will help inform subscribers and fans so they can come fully prepared too. You don't have to stick rigidly to this but it'll help keep your audience qualified and interested. It can also help to rein everyone in when the Blab goes off topic, as happens quite often, especially when you have people jumping in and out of the conversation. Sending out a preparation email can also help you get a list of semi-vetted contributors ready to jump into the conversation. Have them let you know they'd like to be a part of the conversation and you can invite them in to speak at certain points to break up the expert discussion. This kind of planning works especially well when you want to use the Blab footage later as a podcast or something along those lines. Along with this you should schedule your Blabs within the platform as this will send out automatic Tweets when you're starting and send Push notifications to App users. Fail To Prepare Prepare To Fail! Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 37
  • 38. Follow-up At the end of a Blab remember to thank your contributors. If it's appropriate add them on your other social networks and begin to take your normal relationship nurturing steps. If you're using Blab for Marketing and Lead Generation then just broadcasting is only going to go so far. When is there going to be a better time to get connected to someone than after you've just finished talking to them? Ask people for their comments, feedback and suggestions. Your Blabs shouldn't be one off broadcasts. You want your viewers and contributors to keep coming back every time you broadcast. Keep them enthused by giving a look forward at the end of your Blabs or in your follow up emails. Give them hints about your next big guest or some other reason to come back next time. Setting out a schedule for your fans to know about will help to keep viewership high and also encourages them to share your future events with other people who might be interested. If you've finished with some unanswered questions or pressing discussion points then use this to your advantage, schedule a follow-up Blab soon after. This will give you a second bite at the cherry and helps you see how engaged your audience really were. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com Page | 38
  • 39. Know your stuff before you host Blab's UI is very intuitive, but it pays to spend a few minutes getting to grip with everything before you dive into a Blab head first. When you're watching someone speak or are in a Blab you can give them 'Props' by clicking the little icon in the bottom right of their pane. These accumulate over the course of the Blab but disappear afterwards. It's a good way to show that you're appreciating what the speaker is saying but the fact that they're short lived means they won't become some ego- point people can wave about on the site. In the chat type '/Q' to have your comment tagged as a question so it's more obvious to the people hosting the Blab. When you're hosting a Blab type '/Topic' to change the topic. Doing this as you move over different topics can get you more interest from people searching for certain kinds of content. Make sure you know all of the relevant commands and interface options so you can help out those in your Blab if they run into simple problems like not knowing how to highlight their question. • 40. Use your Blabs in your content marketing Blab allows you to record up to 6 hours in one session. This is free video content for your Content Marketing! If you're the host then once a Blab finishes if you've set it to record you'll be emailed a video file, a separate audio file and an embed code. So now you can put all that great information you shared up on your website, two birds one stone! You can pause the recording function during a Blab if you get off topic and start it up again once you're back on course. Make sure you select the record option at the start because if you don't the Blab is lost and you can't retrieve it. Blabs are saved on the site when they're recorded and anyone can watch them via the replay function. So this means if you want your Blab to be a one off, 'off the record' so to speak you should ensure that it's not being recorded as these recordings are all public. Ā©2015 WSI-eMarketing.com
