They established various types of towns, including colonies of Roman settlers, municipalities where the inhabitants were granted citizenship, and civitates based on old Celtic tribal capitals. In 122 AD, Emperor Hadrian built Hadrian's Wall to mark the border between Roman Britain and the unconquered lands of the Scottish and Pictish peoples to the north.
