Biochar is a charcoal-like substance produced by heating biomass in low-oxygen conditions, a process called pyrolysis. Adding biochar to soil can result in bigger, healthier crops by improving soil quality and retaining nutrients and water. While biochar remains in soil for thousands of years, the specific biomass used and methods of production can impact results. Some farmers are producing their own biochar as a way to potentially decrease herbicide and pesticide use.
