BIMSTEC, as a interregional organization and a economic bloc has some important characteristics. As the curing measure for 1997's Asian Economic Crisis, 4 countries from South Asian And South East Asian Region established a Economic bloc. Main Objective:
• Technical and Economic
Cooperation among the member
states.
• Priority Areas initially, in 1997,
were 6 in numbers, namely-
Technology, Trade, Tourism,
Transport, Energy, and Fisheries.
• Up until 2008, the priority areas
were increased with incorporated
agriculture, Public Health, Poverty
Alleviation, Counter Terrorism,
Environment, Culture, People to
People Contact and Climate
Change.
As BIMSTEC has always been a
sector driven regional organization, in
the latest fifth BIMSTEC summit held in
Colombo, Sri Lanka on March 2022,
the member states decided to establish
7 sector pillars under which all the
other, previously bifurcated 14 sectors,
were incorporated.

Examples related to BIMSTEC Activities:
1. BIMSTEC Charter was adopted on the 5th SUMMIT held in Colombo Sri Lanka on March 2022. This
charter was an attempt to strengthen regional ties in response of after-COVID economic crisis,
RUSSIA-UKRAINE Conflict.
2. In it’s 25 years journey, 6 SUMMITT were organized in 2004, 2008, 2014,2016, 2018 & 2016. the
summit of 2016 was actually a BIMSTEC Leader’s Retreat in Goa, India. In this 6 summit, 6 Summit
Declarations were adopted with reassuring the goodwill and cooperative intention of the member
states.
3. During these 25 years, 17 Ministerial Meeting were held. In these ministerial meetings, foreign
ministers of every member states attended and expressed their idea regarding further operation of
BIMSTEC in the region. As a result of these meetings, several documents were mandated.
4. So far, 14 Declaration and Agreements, other than Summit Declaration and Ministerial Meeting report
were agreed upon by the Member States. Of which, 4 were framed and signed by the members in
2022’s BIMSTEC Summit. Some of the important declarations and agreements are: Bangkok
Declaration of 1997, Framework Agreement on the BIMSTEC Free Trade Area of 2004, MOA on the
establishment of the BIMSTEC Permanent Secretariat of 2014, BIMSTEC Master Plan for Transport
Connectivity of 2022, BIMSTEC Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters of 2022 and
BIMSTEC Charter of 2022.
