Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975 and served as CEO until 2000. He grew up in Seattle and showed an early aptitude for computers. At Harvard, he met Paul Allen and they started Microsoft to develop software. Microsoft secured a pivotal deal with IBM in 1980 to develop the operating system for IBM PCs, which helped make Microsoft the dominant player in the PC software market. Gates stepped down as CEO in 2000 but remains chairman of Microsoft and devotes significant time to philanthropic causes through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
