Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Jola odkopała stare znajomości – Arif, poznany w Portugalii okazał się Notatki z podróży Rozdział I: Przygotowania Miesiąc na Jawie? Pytanie! Jasne, że jedziemy! Zbieramy manatki i ruszamy! Zanim jednak rzuciliśmy się w wir przygód mieliśmy niezły młynek z przygotowaniami... rodowitym Jawajczykiem i skontaktował nas z przyjaciółmi – mamy gdzie nocować !! Zaopatrzeni w adresy, ściągę z przydatnymi słówkami, zapas kawy KOPIKO i moc pozytywnej energii ruszyliśmy na podbój krainy kraterami usianej...
2. 2. Cirebon 1. Jakarta Aklimatyzujemy się na miejscu. Dobre winko wskazane. Po wizycie w parku miniatur wiemy czego się spodziewać. Będzie się działo!! Rozdział II: w drodze… Lisendra zgodziła się nas przenocować i oprowadzić po Jakarcie. Zamiast poznawać Indonezję to Indonezja poznaje nas, jesteśmy atrakcją turystyczną. Szczególnie uśmiechnięte blondynki…. Pierwsze przejazdy autobusami, pierwsze świątynie, pierwsze targowania- Cebula ma w tym doświadczenie z Marokko Sprzedawcy mają dla niej specjalne ceny - 2x wyższe…
3. 3. Semarang i płaskowyż Dieng Płaskowyż Dieng, śpimy w namiocie wśród nowych zapachów- lasy są jakieś takie świeższe… Płaskowyż, znany jest z dwóch wschodów słońca, srebrnego i złotego. Pierwszy jest złoty, między 5:30 a 6:00 rano, obserwujemy go z punktu widokowego usytuowanego na poziomie 1 700 m, w Wonosobo. Około 4 godziny drogi od Semarang znajdujemy jedne z najstarszych świątyń Hindu na Jawie. Położone w centrum Jawy, 2000 m ppm, 100 km od miasta Borobudur. Są tutaj świątynie budowane około roku 800, kolorowe jeziora i jeziora parujące. Kawa dawno tak nie smakowała… Mamy przenośną gazówkę. A co!! Grunt to przygotowanie.
4. 4. Surabaya Mount Papandaya Kompleks wulkanów z czterema kraterami. Położenie: (17 km od Garut or 50 km od Bandung). Łatwe do zdobycia, do jednego z kraterów prowadzi droga. Znajduje się tutaj świątynia Cangkuang (jezioro Cangkuang). Towarzyszy nam dziwna niepewność chodząc pomiędzy dymiącymi wulkanami… Na plantacji tytoniu wypalamy fajkę pokoju z miejscowymi. Można by rzec gwóźdź programu. Plantacja kawy KOPIKO- aromat Jawy schowany w paczce. Udaje im się to!!
5. 5. Malang Prowadzimy lekcję o Polsce w miejscowej szkole. Wszystko było ustalone wcześniej. Przez te wszystkie pytania prezentacja przeciągnęła się o 1h 6. Sumberwaru Ridoni zgodziła się nas przenocować w Malang. Odpoczywamy przygotowując się do wizyty w szkole. Baluran Savannah National Park Tutejesza fauna i flora w jednym miejscu. Ogromny teren, dziewczyny bawią się z małpami, Dominik boi się RAFLESII . 15 km od wjazdu, odwiedzamy białą plażę, Bama Beach, pływamy pośród raf koralowych. Ijen – jezioro w kraterze. Może otworzymy fabrykę zapałek?
6. 7. Yogjakarta Borobudur i Prembanan- coś z listy UNESCO Tugu Jogja- statua, którą studenci całują po studiach (my też!!) Oglądamy. Teatr Kukiełkowy Wayang Kulit. przedstawienie z ponad 500-letnią tradycją . Niestety baterie wysiadły Malioboro – targ z pamiątkami. Bromo Tenegger Mieszkańcy tych okolic byli bezskutecznie wysiedlani. Kultywują swoje tradycje, m.in..ceremonia Yadnya Kasada , która odbywa się na szczycie krateru góry Bromo.Musimy to zobaczyć

Bundung jest naszą bazą wypadową do wspinaczki w Tebing Parang i Citatah Kolejny niezapomniany dzień, wynajętą łódką płyniemy przez rzekę w kanionie, czołgamy się w jaskini, skaczemy ze skały na skałę aby wykąpać się pod wodospadem. Na plaży Ombak Surfujemy!!!
9. 10. Jakarta i okolice W Klappa Nunggal powspinaliśmy się z miejscowymi. Zdziwieni naszym widokiem i bardzo przyjaźni . Długo nie zapomnimy smaku świeżo zaparzonej herbaty z najmłodszych własnoręcznie zerwanych liści…. Ostatnie dni spędzamy znów w Jakarcie. Zrobiliśmy duże koło wokół Jawy. Nie chcemy wracać !!!! Piękne, zielone i pachnące herbatą wzgórza Bogor są dla nas domem przez kilka dni. Namiot się sprawuje idealnie, autostop też działa.
