Big Science refers to large-scale scientific projects usually funded by governments involving large budgets, staff, machines, and laboratories. Examples include the Human Genome Project and particle accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider, which cost billions. These projects developed after WWII from governments sponsoring massive laboratories employing thousands to develop new weapons and tools. While enabling major discoveries, Big Science has been criticized for requiring unique, expensive machines and facilities that limit access and verification of results.
