2. Guns, Germs, and Steel Written by Jared Diamond. The book argues that power and technology separate societies and allow one to conquer the other because they are more advanced. Discusses cultural and genetic differences that give one an advantage over the other. Discusses the impact that war, weapons, disease, and new technology have affected different parts of the world.
3. The Journey of Men A film that I think I have seen before in a different class.. Spencer wells goes and explores the tribes in Africa to track their DNA and find connections. The DNA findings showed peoples migrations throughout the world. He does a lot of discussion with the natives about their traditions and stories of the past. His studies help to identify growth of crops and products.
4. Catastrophe! A movie on Columbus and his journeys. It was not until the third one that he came to the main land of the Americas. It talks about the exchange between cultures and how horses were re-introduced into society there. Columbus was constantly looking for a method of exchange. At one point they discovered an amazing crop which was potatoes and after that it was a huge contribution to feeding people there and in other countries.
5. Peoples and Empires This book which was written by Anthony Pagden covers a very big portion of history. It talks about migration, and introducing new ideas and cultures into different societies. I do not think the book was long enough to go into great detail about everything that could have been covered, but it does a good job of touching on interesting subjects.
6. The Day the Universe Changed A film that was viewed that focused a great deal on the advances in science and technology in the world. Mostly it discussed the changes that occurred. It talked about the change in church and in transportation. It also talked about questions being asked and answered, and new developments because of those questions and answers.
