Most of the current interfaces to digital libraries are built on keyword-based search and list-based presentation. For users who do not have specific items to search for but would rather explore not-yet-familiar topics, it is not easy to figure out to what extend and on which aspects the returned records match the query. Users have to try different combinations of keywords to narrow down or broaden the search space in the hope of getting useful results in the end. In this talk, we will present a web interface that provides users an opportunity to interactively and visually explore the context of queries. In this interface, after entering a query, a contextual view about the query is visualised, where the most related journals, authors, subject headings, publishers, topical terms, etc. are positioned in 2D based on their relatedness to the query and among each other. By clicking any of these nodes, a new visualisation about the selected one is presented. With this click-through style, the users could get visual contexts about their selected entities (journal, author, topical terms, etc.) and shift their interests by choosing interested (types of) entities to investigate further. At any stop, a search in WorldCat.org with the currently focused entity (a topical word, a author or a journal) will return the most matched results (judged by the standard WorldCat search engine).
We implemented this interface over WorldCat, the world largest bibliographic database. To guarantee the responsiveness of this interactive interface, we adopt a two-step approach: an off-line preparation phase with an on-line process. Off-line, we build the semantic representation of each entity where Random Projection is used to vigorously reduce dimensionality (from 6 million to 600). In the on-line interface terms from a query are compared to entities in the reduced semantic matrix where reciprocal relatedness is used to select genuine matches. The number of hits is further reduced to render a network layout easy to overview and navigate. In the end, we can investigate the relations between roughly 6 million topical terms, 5 million authors, 1 million subject headings 1000 Dewey decimal codes and 1.7 million publishers.

Extracting and analyzing discussion data with google sheets and google analytics
Online discussions can be a rich source of data for researchers in the humanities and social sciences. In this workshop, participants will learn how to use Google Sheets to push online discussion board data into Google Analytics, where it can be analysed. The session will also demonstrate how to use TAGS, the widely-used script for archiving Twitter data. Participants can bring their own laptops if they wish; there will also be desktop PCs for use.

RuleML 2015: When Processes Rule Events
Big data, with its four main characteristics (Volume, Velocity,
Variety, and Veracity) pose challenges to the gathering, management, analytics, and visualization of events. These very same four characteristics, however, also hold a great promise in unlocking the story behind data. In this talk, we focus on the observation that event creation is guided by processes. For example, GPS information, emitted by buses in an urban setting follow the bus scheduled route. Also, RTLS information about the whereabouts of patients and nurses in a hospital is guided by the predefined schedule of work. With this observation at hand, we thoroughly seek a method for mining, not the data, but rather the rules that guide data creation and show how, by knowing such rules, big data tasks become more efficient and more effective. In particular, we demonstrate how, by knowing the rules that govern event creation, we can detect complex events sooner and make use of historical data to predict future behaviors.

This presentation overviews how the City of Houston approached the creation of an Open Data Policy, what elements were incorporated into the policy, and the challenges encountered from development to implementation. To ensure that an open data initiative achieves the best results for a government organization and its constituents, a well crafted Open Data Policy is needed to direct strategy and mitigate risk for the organization.
Knowledge Discovery in Environmental Management
This is a research presentation by Aparna Varde during a summer research visit at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbruecken, Germany in August 2015 within the research group of Dr. Gerhard Weikum, The presentation focuses on various aspects of data mining and knowledge discovery pertinent to environmental science and management. It encompasses three main topics: (1) decision support for the greening of data centers; (2) predictive analysis in urban planning and simulation; and (3) common sense knowledge for domain-specific KBs. It includes a few brief highlights on web and text mining in article / collocation error detection as well as in terminology evolution. This presentation is based on her relevant work as per August 2015, serving as an invited talk during this research visit.

Big Data in NATO and Your Role
"Big Data" is term heard more and more in industry – but what does it really mean? There is a vagueness to the term reminiscent of that experienced in the early days of cloud computing. This has led to a number of implications for various industries and enterprises. These range from identifying the actual skills needed to recruit talent to articulating the requirements of a "big data" project. Secondary implications include difficulties in finding solutions that are appropriate to the problems at hand – versus solutions looking for problems. This presentation will take a look at Big Data and offer the audience with some considerations they may use immediately to assess the use of analytics in solving their problems.
The talk begins with an idea of how big "Big Data" can be. This leads to an appreciation of how important "Management Questions" are to assessing analytic needs. The fields of data and analysis have become extremely important and impact nearly all facets of life and business. During the talk we will look at the two pillars of Big Data – Data Warehousing and Predictive Analytics. Then we will explore the open source tools and datasets available to NATO action officers to work in this domain. Use cases relevant to NATO will be explored with the purpose of show where analytics lies hidden within many of the day-to-day problems of enterprises. The presentation will close with a look at the future. Advances in the area of semantic technologies continue. The much acclaimed consultants at Gartner listed Big Data and Semantic Technologies as the first- and third-ranked top technology trends to modernize information management in the coming decade. They note there is an incredible value "locked inside all this ungoverned and underused information." HQ SACT can leverage this powerful analytic approach to capture requirement trends when establishing acquisition strategies, monitor Priority Shortfall Areas, prepare solicitations, and retrieve meaningful data from archives.

姜俊宇在國立臺灣大學資訊工程系取得學士與碩士學位，其碩士論文曾獲中華民國人工智慧學會與計算語言學會之碩士論文獎。現於中央研究院擔任研究助理，並將於 2016 年秋季前往美國加州大學洛杉磯分校攻讀博士學位。
主要研究方向為資料探勘、資訊檢索、機器學習與社群網路，近年來的研究成果曾發表於 CIKM, SIGIR, WWW, ICWSM, CCS 等頂級國際學術會議。另外，在 2012 年亦與臺灣大學的教授與同學共同組隊參加 KDDCUP 國際資料探勘大賽，並取得冠軍的成績。

Summary:
This tutorial will introduce the audience to the broad set of issues involved in defining big data benchmarks, for creating auditable industry-standard benchmarks that consider performance as well as price/performance. Big data benchmarks must capture the essential characteristics of big data applications and systems, including heterogeneous data, e.g. structured, semi- structured, unstructured, graphs, and streams; large-scale and evolving system configurations; varying system loads; processing pipelines that progressively transform data; workloads that include queries as well as data mining and machine learning operations and algorithms. Different benchmarking approaches will be introduced, from micro-benchmarks to application- level benchmarking.
Since May 2012, five workshops have been held on Big Data Benchmarking including participation from industry and academia. One of the outcomes of these meetings has been the creation of industry’s first big data benchmark, viz., TPCx-HS, the Transaction Processing Performance Council’s benchmark for Hadoop Systems. During these workshops, a number of other proposals have been put forward for more comprehensive big data benchmarking. The tutorial will present and discuss salient points and essential features of such benchmarks that have been identified in these meetings, by experts in big data as well as benchmarking. Two key approaches are now being pursued—one, called BigBench, is based on extending the TPC- Decision Support (TPC-DS) benchmark with big data applications characteristics. The other called Deep Analytics Pipeline, is based on modeling processing that is routinely encountered in real-life big data applications. Both will be discussed.
We conclude with a discussion of a number of future directions for big data benchmarking

High-performance graph analysis is unlocking knowledge in problems like anomaly detection in computer security, community structure in social networks, and many other data integration areas. While graphs provide a convenient abstraction, real-world problems' sparsity and lack of locality challenge current systems. This talk will cover current trends ranging from massive scales to low-power, low-latency systems and summarize opportunities and directions for graphs and computing systems.

Learning Analytics: Realizing the Big Data Promise in the CSU
The word “analytics” has become a buzzword in current educational technology conversations, applied to everything from analysis of student work to LMS usage reporting to institutional analysis of ERP data. Broadly speaking, Learner Analytics refers to the analysis of student data using statistical techniques to improve decision-making. In the context of educational technology, Learner Analytics promises to improve our understanding of effective (and ineffective) student learning and technology usage. What progress have we seen in realizing this promise? This session offers a discussion of the promise of Learner Analytics, current research findings and tools, and explores examples from CSU Chico and the CSU Office of the Chancellor.

Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
