Big Ben is located in London within the Palace of Westminster. It is the largest mechanical clock in the world, though its name refers specifically to the main bell. Big Ben was built in 1858 next to the Palace of Westminster, home of the UK Parliament, and began operating in 1859. The clock was designed by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin during the reconstruction of the Palace of Westminster following a fire in 1834. Big Ben stands 96.3 meters tall and has a base of 225 square meters.
