JVMCON Java in the 21st Century: are you thinking far enough ahead?Steve Poole
Discussions abound about the ‘future of Java’ though most of them are actually focused on the here and now. What are the consequences of Java 9 modularity, of moving JEE to Eclipse, of running your application in the cloud? All questions that are important now. but what are the important questions for tomorrow?
In this talk learn about a different view on the real future of Java. See how new hardware technologies, new software approaches and new ideas are powering Java towards a life far removed from that envisioned at its inception. It’s time to look up and see how you will need to change how you think: Whether it's driven by AI or Quantum Computers the problems of tomorrow demand new approaches and new thinking. Are you ready?
n detail the talk will show examples from simple procedural thinking , through lambdas to neural networks etc up to quantum computing. The talk will cover how the JVM is being extended to embrace new forms of hardware - from GPU's and FPGAs and large compute clusters through organic processors and (eventually) QC's.
This talk will explain the journey that Java is on and how its ultimate end point is perhaps not what you'd expect.
Cloud Control Access: From Hack to RealityAlan Quayle
Laura Chirca – NEURER BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
We’ve seen several IoT based door access control hacks over the years at TADHack. INOVO is making this a commercial reality for its customers in Romania and beyond. It’s a great example of the migration from hack to business, and the power of the democratization in telecoms enabling people to create solutions for their customers that fit their specific local needs. The Cloud Control Access System opens doors with cards, codes, phones, and SMS. The prototype starts with physical door controllers (the first release is Arduino-based), then migrates to intermediate building proxies that hold the customers’ database in case the internet goes down (a reality most businesses face several times a year) and them migrating to a scalable cloud authentication and portal layer.

Evolution of the Telco Services Plane
Greg Sikora, Business Development OVOO
Over the past decade the number of telecom service providers has exploded with IP-based telecom services, CPaaS / UCaaS / CCaaS providers, enterprises running their telecom services, xVNOs, etc.
All these new players have brought new skills and new approaches to the creation of telecom services, and belatedly telcos are now adopting new approaches for their Telco Services Plane.
Given our experiences across a range of service providers we’ll describe the evolution of the Telco Services Plane to support new capabilities both within and without the network. Let innovation flourish!

Open Source Telecom Survey 2021 Results & Discussion
Alan Quayle, Independent Consultant in Programmable Communications
This is our 3rd year of the survey, thank you for your continued support.
We received 114 responses to the general survey, +163 project survey responses giving a total of 277 received.
The general survey covered: Security, Serverless, STIR/SHAKEN, barriers and benefits of OSS, telcos and OSS, Training, IoT, and general geographic / category info.
Training: An interesting dichotomy is where people do not expect to pay for training when investigating a project but will pay when the project is part of their business.
MOOC.org pricing is interesting. It’s free if you just want to learn, if you want the training recognized, then there’s a fee. This enables people to investigate for free, and then if they require support, the training needs to be verified. This avoids training through support.
Open Source telecom software is part of a suite of open source projects used.
Perhaps we should investigate dominant architectures?
Companies that use open source make a long-term commitment to building an organization that understands open source, and is committed to owning the product, its roadmap, and the customer experience.
Companies successful with open source do not happen overnight, they are built over years.

DevOps ist normal - DevOps Essentials 2019 - Schlomo SchapiroSchlomo Schapiro
Video: https://vimeo.com/348556177

Many organizations around the world have adopted Oracle technology for developing custom applications. Over the past two decades, they may have used PL/SQL, Reports, Forms, Designer, Portal or the Web PL/SQL Toolkit. Many of these organizations have come to face new challenges: more agility or functionality, new user groups or channels or more efficient maintenance. Or they fear getting stuck in the past, running out of support or qualified and motivated resources. What is the right way to approach the future? What mix of tools, how and when to adopt which new technology, how to build a business case? This session recounts various more and less successful warstories of organizations that embarked on a journey into the future.
We will discuss SOA, ADF, OSB, WebCenter, SaaS, Forms, WebLogic, .NET, Java and much more.
How can we communicate the effectiveness of DevOps to technical and business people?
What metaphors and examples help?
What kind of people should we hire?
This presentation was given as an Ignite talk at DevOps Days Europe 2010 in Hamburg.

Transform a classic IT department into a Lean delivery machine for digital se...Institut Lean France
At Suez Environnement we took the opportunity of a new strategic project, to radically transform the way we conceive, build and deliver internet applications. We changed the way we build internet platforms using the Cloud. Agile metho¬dologies and Lean management were a big help. We learned that architecture is key for performance but also for organizing the work. We came to the realiza¬tion that traditional applications specifications are no longer needed in 2015. We learned ways to manage developers in a context where most of your IT is out¬sourced. A presentation by Frédéric Charles at the Lean IT Summit 2015
Many organizations engage in initiatives to develop elaborate reference architectures, patterns and governance processes in an attempt to optimize their enterprise. They put significant effort into the upfront guidance of development teams, and then find themselves challenged to understand how closely an architecture matches the approved approach after the projects complete. Organizations must take a new approach to this problem!

This seminar discusses the problems observed for major organisations and their inability to change. Current Life cycle styles are described and some clues to how you as an Enterprise Architect could act in order not to repeat the errors done; error on a scale that it have and will cause lost ability to change and eventually bankruptcy.

18. IT Legacy is #1 obstacle for innovation
Major corporations depend on core systems that
- Are 25-45 years old
- 1-2 persons know
- All staff are retired, or will be it within 2-3 years
- Technology support is gone
- Are undocumented
- Have no/few formal test cases

19. The ability to innovate
is strictly coupled with
the ability to fail fast
20. Nine observations on IT Complexity
1. Most IT systems are too complex.
2. "Best Practices" increase complexity.
3. Complex systems cost more to build.
4. Complex systems are harder to deliver.
5. Complex systems are less secure.
6. Complex systems are less reliable.
7. Complex systems are less agile.
8. Complex systems cost more to run.
And
9. Existing management approaches ignore complexity.
21. But what is Simple-IT, then?
1. Non complex
2. Small building blocks
3. Autonomous
4. They “know nothing”
5. Service based
6. Dynamic
7. Like lego bricks
8. Pace layered - exposes an OpenAPI

Ops – will have to receive ”any crap” since Dev just want to rush it
Devs – will have to wait until Ops feels they are ready
Whatif Devs were meassured on uptime & Ops on new features?
Just a thought….

Pace Layering
Netflix: Developers build, deploy and operate their own server clusters and are accountable when things go wrong
The train is a stable, robust mode of mass transportation.
It is not flexible but reaches its goal in a predictable, straightforward way (ignore possible regional differences, we are not comparing Great Britain and Scandinavia here).
It is based on an infrastructure that is designed and built to last for decades
The BUS is also a relatively stable mode of mass transportation, but clearly with more flexibility. A bus can take a detour if circumstances require,
and it can be used for alternative purposes on top of the fixed schedule. Moreover, it usually connects directly with the train system.
Andreas Gyllenhammar: “75 kg person in a 1500 kg car is a lot of dead weight and plain stupid”
The CAR is a much more agile, individualized means of transport. It can take a person – or a small group of people – to most of the places they want to go.
There are many different types of cars to choose from and their owners will configure and adapt them to reflect their individual, differentiated styles and personalities.
People – particularly men, admittedly – often confess to “love” their cars: Their car gives them a sense of freedom and it is often tightly integrated with their everyday lives.
The BIKE is a lightweight, extremely flexible and individual method of transport. It can be used for the “last mile,” bringing you to places even cars cannot reach. In crowded areas, scooters are faster than any other means of transport. There are many different types of scooters and they can only transport one or two people at the same time. It is easy to rent a scooter – just for a day or so – and explore parts of the city in a flexible, cost-effective way. And it is fun too.
Depending on the regional situation, a bicycle would be a suitable metaphor as well, as it is fast, cheap, does not need a heavy engine or lots of fuel, and is extremely agile.
All of these modes of transport are tied together through a HUB, best seen as a modern train station with carefully provided additional services. Such a hub is truly multi-modal in that trains, buses, cars and scooters all can conveniently “dock” and people can easily change their means of transport, while benefiting from a host of add-on services. A well-designed station like this functions as the pumping heart of the city
