The first convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi was held on July 10, 2013. Former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the chief guest and delivered the convocation address. Over 2300 graduands from 2010-2012 received various degrees, including over 1288 B.Tech/B.Pharm degrees and 649 M.Tech/M.Pharm degrees. 1. The eagerly awaited first convocation of the Indian
Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi,
was held on Wednesday, 10th July, 2013 at Swatantrata
Bhawan, Banaras Hindu University. Former President of India,
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a Bharat Ratna awardee, was the
Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring Convocation Address.
More than 2300 graduands, who passed out in the
years 2010, 2011 and 2012 have been awarded various
degrees during the convocation. As many as 1288 degrees of
B.Tech./B.Pharm., 649 degrees of M.Tech./M.Pharm., 287
degrees of integrated dual degree and integrated master’s
degree programmes and 159 PhD degrees were awarded. A
total of 113 graduates from all three years received Gold
Medals. A spectacular feature of this convocation was the
dress code of the event. The black academic gowns and caps
were replaced by more traditional dhoti, kurta and saari
together with a colourful uttariya. In his Convocation Address,
Dr. Kalam emphasized on the rich legacy of the Banaras Hindu
University. The Chairman BoG, IIT (BHU) and Vice Chancellor,
Banaras Hindu University Dr. Lalji Singh presided over the
function. Prof. Rajiv Sangal, Director, IIT (BHU) presented the
Annual Report of the Institute, highlighting the all-round
development in R&D, Projects and Industrial Consultancy.

Orientation Programme
Orientation Programme for the students admitted to IIT
(BHU) in the academic year 2013-14 was held on Saturday,
27th July 2013 at Swatantra Bhawan, BHU. The first year
students and their parents were briefed about the rules and
regulations as well as the unique opportunities available at IIT
(BHU). The students were acquainted with the Gymkhana and
its various councils. A judicious balance between curricular,
co-curricular and extra-curricular activities should be
maintained for a holistic all-round personality development
and the Gymkhana plays a pivotal role in developing the
same. On the following day, the orientation programmes were
held for students in their respective Departments, where they
were briefed about the Departments and the Courses they
would be studying in the forthcoming years.

The fifth meeting of Senate of IIT (BHU), Varanasi was held on
Wednesday, 31st July, ’13 at Swatantrata Bhawan to set out the
procedure & requirements of the undergraduate program and to
pass the new ordinances for UG and PG programmes. The detailed

IIM Metals & Materials Quiz
On Saturday, 10th August, ’13 , the Department organized a
metallurgy quiz on behalf of the Varanasi Chapter of the Indian
Institute of Metals (IIM), Kolkata. A total of 42 teams consisting of
students of classes XI and XII representing 21 schools of Varanasi
participated in the quiz. The quiz was conducted in two stages.
Sixteen teams were selected on the basis of a written test. The
teams thus selected, participated in an oral quiz conducted by
Prof. R.K Mandal. Both the winning team and the runners-up team
were from Sunbeam School, Bhagwanpur. The winning team will be
representing the IIM-Varanasi chapter at IGCAR, Kalpakkam during
the International Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz. The
quiz was concluded with the prize distribution to the winners and
runners-up by the chief guest of the day, Prof. G. V. S Sastry, the
Head of the Department followed by vote of thanks by Dr. Kaushik
Chattopadhyay. At the end of the quiz, an official lunch was
organized for all the participants, organizers and the faculty
members.

New logo of IIT (BHU), passed in the Senate
The IIM, Varanasi Chapter and the Department of Metallurgical
Engineering of IIT (BHU), Varanasi, India are organizing the 51st
NMD and 67th ATM of the Indian Institute of Metals. This will be
held during 12th to 15th November, 2013 at IIT (BHU). The
Department is proud to host IIM NMD-ATM for the third time and it
coincides with ninety years of glorious tradition of education and
research in metals and materials. So, it is organizing an alumni
meet, ‘Alumni Meet-90’, in the afternoon of the 15th of November.
