Exploring the Mindfulness Understanding Its Benefits.pptxMartaLoveguard
Slide 1: Title: Exploring the Mindfulness: Understanding Its Benefits
Slide 2: Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness, defined as the conscious, non-judgmental observation of the present moment, has deep roots in Buddhist meditation practice but has gained significant popularity in the Western world in recent years. In today's society, filled with distractions and constant stimuli, mindfulness offers a valuable tool for regaining inner peace and reconnecting with our true selves. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop a heightened awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and presence in our daily lives.
Slide 3: Benefits of Mindfulness for Mental Well-being
Practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, improving overall quality of life.
Mindfulness increases awareness of our emotions and teaches us to manage them better, leading to improved mood.
Regular mindfulness practice can improve our ability to concentrate and focus our attention on the present moment.
Slide 4: Benefits of Mindfulness for Physical Health
Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can contribute to lowering blood pressure, which is beneficial for heart health.
Regular meditation and mindfulness practice can strengthen the immune system, aiding the body in fighting infections.
Mindfulness may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity by reducing stress and improving overall lifestyle habits.
Slide 5: Impact of Mindfulness on Relationships
Mindfulness can help us better understand others and improve communication, leading to healthier relationships.
By focusing on the present moment and being fully attentive, mindfulness helps build stronger and more authentic connections with others.
Mindfulness teaches us how to be present for others in difficult times, leading to increased compassion and understanding.
Slide 6: Mindfulness Techniques and Practices
Focusing on the breath and mindful breathing can be a simple way to enter a state of mindfulness.
Body scan meditation involves focusing on different parts of the body, paying attention to any sensations and feelings.
Practicing mindful walking and eating involves consciously focusing on each step or bite, with full attention to sensory experiences.
Slide 7: Incorporating Mindfulness into Daily Life
You can practice mindfulness in everyday activities such as washing dishes or taking a walk in the park.
Adding mindfulness practice to daily routines can help increase awareness and presence.
Mindfulness helps us become more aware of our needs and better manage our time, leading to balance and harmony in life.
Slide 8: Summary: Embracing Mindfulness for Full Living
Mindfulness can bring numerous benefits for physical and mental health.
Regular mindfulness practice can help achieve a fuller and more satisfying life.
Mindfulness has the power to change our perspective and way of perceiving the world, leading to deeper se
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

BGF PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
PROF. DATUk SERI DR. VIcTOR WEE
Strong Appeal of Mindfulness in the West
Mindfulness has picked up strong momentum in the West. The “Search Inside
Yourself” program in Google started by Tan Chade Meng is so popular that
thousands of Google employees took his class, with many more in the long
waiting list. Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University
“Executive Mind” class offers mindfulness as essential tool for an effective
leader.
Steve Job credited his early studies of Zen Buddhism that influenced his creative
output and business practices at Apple. Aspen Institute President Walter Isaacs
on said: “Most of us could benefit from having a little more of Buddha in us
during our daily lives.”
Research Findings on Mindfulness
Over the past decades, research on meditation and mindfulness practices shed
light on how these practices affect the brain and physical and mental health.
Research at University of Utah found that individuals who are more mindful
have more stable emotions and better control over their mood and behaviour
throughout the day.

Wise Words on Parents
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay)
said: “Father’s work is enormous, huge
as a mountain. Mother’s devotion is
like the water flowing from a mountain
spring that gushes without end.
Mother’s love is our first taste of love,
the origin and source of all feelings of
love. Our mother is the teacher who first
teaches us to love, the most important
lesson in our life. Without her, we
cannot have known how to love.”
One day when Thay’s mother died,
he wrote in his journal, “The greatest
misfortuneofmylifehasjusthappened.”
He was a monk then. He said that even
when you are an adult and living away
from your mother, her death leaves
you feeling like an abandoned young
orphan.
At BGF Chinese New Year Celebration
held on Sunday 25 February, Buddhist
Education organized a Tea Offering
Ceremony for the Gem Kids/Teens to
offer tea to their parents. In my talk
to them, I said that the Tea Offering
Ceremony is very meaningful for
children to thank their parents and
ask for forgiveness. Parents can use
the occasion to remember their duty to
children and give them blessings.
The Pali word for parents is “mata-
pitaro” i.e. mother and father. It is
significant to note that in Pali, the word
“mother” comes before “father”. Parents
are considered a rich field of merit, and
children are lucky if they still have their
parents to serve.
The Buddha mentioned that children
could not sufficiently repay their
parents. Even if we were to carry our
mother and father on our shoulders for
100 years and give them all wealth of
the entire world, we still cannot repay
our gratitude to them. The only way of
repaying is to bring our parents to the
Buddha Dhamma.

linked through kamma. You may give
them your love but not your opinions
because they have their own thoughts.
Teach them how to value truthfulness,
kindness and compassion, and how to
make wise judgments and arrive at good
decisions.
Reflections for Parents
During the Tea Offering Ceremony, a
parent should think: “How can I be a
good parent to be worthy of the respect
and good wishes from my child who is
now bowing to me? How can I lead my
child through my own good example so
that he or she will grow to be an adult
that I will be proud of?”
Give your child your blessings. For
Buddhists, parents are the Brahmas
(gods) at home. The expression of
gratitude and thanks from the children
and the giving of blessings by parents are
the real angpow (red packet), which goes
beyond the money in the red packets.
Remembering Father
Someone said, “A father thinks about
his children day and night even when
they are not with him. He will love
them forever in a way they could never
understand.” When a father holds his
first newborn baby in his arms for the
first time, a thought would have crossed
his mind that the life of this little infant
is dependent on him. How can he ensure
that the baby will be well provided and
grow up into a good and useful adult?
However, there are cases of parents who
hurt their children and plant seeds of
sufferinginthem.Actually,theseparents
did not mean to plant these seeds, but
they were victims themselves, having
received the same treatment from their
own parents. Thay’s advice is to practice
mindful living to put a stop to the
transmission of the seeds of suffering to
our children and grandchildren.
Advice to Parents
In the Sigalovada Sutta, the Buddha
said that it is the duty of parents to
restrain children from negative actions
and establish them in virtuous action.
Parents must also provide training and
education to children and give them
inheritance at the proper time.
Some parents are too possessive
with regards to their children. In
The Prophet, Khalil Gibran wrote:

from you”. This is good advice because

Talk by Prof Datuk Seri Dr Victor Wee,
entitled “Gratitude Is the Beginning of
Happiness”. The talk centred on how
our parents have selflessly nurtured their
children’s wellbeing from birth and how
we as Buddhists can repay our parents
by bringing them towards practicing the
Dhamma. The highlight of the morning
was the “Tea Ceremony with Parents and
Children” led by Bro Daniel Kwok. After
a5minute“MeditationEspresso”session,
BGF Members and Parents organized
themselves for the Tea Ceremony. While
both the Gem Kids and Teens were
bowing to their parents, parents looked
on lovingly and blessed their children
with words of encouragement, praise
and well wishes. Parents were then
served tea, while other members helped
with the Photography and Videography.
After the energetic Photography Session
with the Mini Lions and Puppy Puppets
(made by Gem Kids & Gem Teens
students) to commemorate the Year of
the Dog 2018, our very own “God of
Prosperity” (Choy Sun Yeh) made his
appearance spreading joy and laughter
whilst distributing mandarin oranges to
the crowd. Members also contributed
with the cleaning and packing of K.
Sri Dhammananda Hall on Level 2, so
by the time the Fire Cracker session on
the Ground Floor was ready, the Hall
upstairs was already cleaned.
This year, the firecrackers were stringed
longer, up to 32 feet and just as the
explosions ended, the D2Y Lion Dance
Troupe went ahead in setting BGF alive
with their energetic movements, spirited
drumming and clashing cymbals. A
group of delighted children had to be held
back from touching the lion costume as
the dancers peeled the Mandarin oranges
on a round tray at the Shrine Hall.

‘Case Conceptualisation’ Workshop on
6 January 2018
The ‘Case Conceptualization’ workshop
as a follow-up to ethics in counseling
was conducted by Sis Sin Ye on 6 January
2018 with 15 participants attending. A
fuller account is given elsewhere in this
issue.
Buddhist Education (led by Bro Daniel
Kwok and Bro Tee Chee Seng) were in
charge of the Tea Ceremony and they
both did a great job of getting parents
and children involved. It was a beautiful
ceremony where children pay respect
to their parents by serving them tea,
wishing them well and showing their
gratitude. It was not only the young ones
that were paying their respects to their
parents, some grandparents that came
along, the adults were also seen bowing
and serving tea to their own parents.
After the Tea Ceremony, “Choy San
Yeh” (God of Prosperity) volunteered
by Bro.Alex Chan appeared bearing
oranges and good wishes for all present.
Many were seen clamoring for a photo
opportunity with “Choy San Yeh”.
There was a Lion Dance performance
by D2Y and igniting of firecrackers to
usher in good wishes to BGF and its
members before the tossing of Yee Sang
and fellowship lunch.
The Yee Sang platters were beautifully
prepared and made by another team
of volunteers led by Sis. Wong (BGF
Counseling Unit). They had so much fun
trying to decorate the plate with image
of the “Dog”. Not only did it look cute
it was yummy as well. The essence of
Chinese New Year was ever present. It
was a joyful and meaningful morning
that saw children and adults having a
great time. “Gong Xi Fa Cai” to all!

8. New Marriage Education Program
(MEP)
Due to shortage of funds, BGF was
unable to get approval to do another
MEP in 2017 from the Ministry of
Women, Family and Community
Development. Our previous MEP (15th
Edition) was conducted on 1 to 2 Oct
2016 and attended by 16 couples.
With the approval of BGF’s Exco, BGFCU
has come out with its own MEP. Sis Siew
Yin Heng is leading the work team to
implement this. The program will be for
one full day to maximize participation of
couples. The revised MEP will focus on
communications and couple bonding.
The date fixed for the first program is
10 June 2018, and the registration fee
will be RM 100 per couple. A follow-up
workshop for married couples (newly as
well as long time married) is also being
considered.
Further Changes in the BGFCU Exco
The Exco established 2 subcommittees to
see to the following:
(i) Training/roleplay subcommittee
looking after the course syllabus, trainee
standards and training issues led by Sis.
Siew Yin Heng.
(ii) Phone Line Services subcommittee
to assess and meet phoneline service’s
needs through recruitment and retention
of para-counselors led by Sis. K C
Chiang.
Volunteers from 2018
For this year’s intake of new volunteers,
BGFCU decided on a new approach.
Participants from the 25th and 26th
courses were invited to take part. Those
who applied were then interviewed
by a panel led by Sis. Siew Yin Heng
and with members Sis. Wong Chung
Heong and Sis. Iris Goh on 4 and 11
February 2018. The interviews were
done to access the following:
(i) Suitability and temperament of the
volunteers to do telephone counseling
duties.
(ii) Willingness of the volunteers to
undergo and stay with the rigorous
training required.
(iii) Commitment of volunteers for
duties for a reasonable period after
training.
Twelve volunteers were accepted after
the interviews for this program which
will start on 3 March 2018.
Volunteers from 2017
This group has commenced roleplay
sessions through the phone lines.
We have 4 volunteers from the 23rd
Counseling Course in this group. Bro.
Lee Suan Seng, who is in charge of
Than Hsiang Mitraline training and a
fully qualified counselor, continues to
facilitate this group. The volunteers are
expected to complete their training by
middle of the year and will be assigned
telephone counseling duties.
Volunteers from 2014/2016

10. Case Conceptualization was taught to
enable para-counselors to understand a
Person-in-Need (PiN) by learning more
oftheirbackgroundandlifeexperiences.
Sis Sin Yee used the Virginia Satir’s
Iceberg Theory to explain this and also
taught the participants how to use the
Lifeline method, by going through
the history of significant events in a
person’s life that have shaped their
character. The learning was made
even more interesting by a practical
exercise with Bro Jeen Lim, a participant,
gamely volunteering to have his Lifeline
drawn out and the rest of us making
assumptions and conclusions about his
life choices and character traits.
It was a very interesting topic that
provided useful skills to aid us in our
service to the PiNs and we gratefully
thank Sis Sin Yee for her commitment
and compassion in sharing her time and
knowledge with us.
