Jazz drumming developed from African rhythms and snare drum rudiments, and the invention of the drum set allowed drummers to accompany jazz soloists and groups. The swing pattern is the fundamental rhythm that underlies jazz, while the drummer improvises on the snare drum, plays hi-hat on beats 2 and 4, and uses the bass drum in variations with the snare and in accompaniment with cymbals. Drummers also have opportunities to solo, trading phrases with other instruments.
