Many in the media have made impressive strides in creating content for a diverse audience, but we still have a long way to go to truly be representative. As publications work toward being more inclusive, how do we make sure that we’re actually talking to different communities, not just about them? In this session, SELF’s digital director Leta Shy will discuss ways those in the media can avoid tokenization and work toward making everyone feel welcome.

3. The good news: We’re making progress.

4. • In 2018, 38% of all the major fashion
magazines featured a nonwhite cover
star on their September issues (up from
32%).
• Movies in 2019 with women in leading
roles increased to 61% (up from 42%).
• The number of female directors of major
motion pictures increased from 8 to 16.

5. But we still have a long way to go.

6. • 79% of the publishing industry is white.
• Only 5% of managers in the publishing
industry are nonwhite.

7. Women, especially women of
color, are less likely to be on staff
at major media publications.

8. Inclusivity doesn’t just happen.
We must put in the work.

Diversifying the workplace helps
businesses increase their market share.

10. Yet people of color and women only
represent 14.5% and 18% of boards of
Fortune 500 companies.
