Robert Menasse moved to Brussels to capture the inner workings of the European Union and wrote the novel The Capital. The novel follows various characters working for the EU, including Fenia Xenapoulou who hopes to improve the Commission's image by declaring Auschwitz as its birthplace. Through these characters, Menasse reveals both absurdities and real dangers of a nationalistic union. The Capital won Germany's highest fiction prize and is considered an important work of world literature.
