2. Bernard Billedo
• Bernard Billedo is a landscape photographer who travels between the Philippines and New Zealand to take
his pictures. He believes in giving his audience an honest view of the world through his pictures, he doesn’t
think we should rely on Photoshop post processing to tell how a picture is perceived. He uses Canon Film
and SLR bodies for landscapes. To me, his pictures are very colourful and they capture every part of light in
the cameras view. His photographs are very sharp and the colours stand out from each other really well, while
complimenting.
• His main focuses are on Landscapes, seascapes, travel, nature, outdoor adventure and some portraits.
• I notice that he focuses on sun rises and sun sets a lot in his pictures and pictures of mountains from a
distance. I personally think this is because of all the contrasting colours. For example on the sunsets there are
yellows pinks and reds that all blend in together and then the mountains different shades of blues etc.
• His images are very much rural landscapes and he never has people in his shots. Mainly just hills and
mountains.

3. Techniques Used.
He uses complementary techniques with this
picture as the flowers really stand out from the
rest of the picture. For example the flowers are
the only colourful things in the picture. He also
uses rules of thirds as the flowers are in the
corner and then the sea and sky are in the
background but because they blend together
they’re not the first things you notice.
This is probably my favourite picture of Billedos because of the
colours used and how they blend together so well. There’s a lot of
little things in the image that you keep noticing every time you look
at it again. I think the way he’s made the stems of the flowers blend
in with the rest of the colours is clever. The flowers look like
they’re floating. Especially the flowers further away from the
camera lens.

4. Strengths and Weaknesses.
Bernard Billedo himself said he’s never done a picture like this before and it took him a while to
finally get it right. He took this picture in 2004. This is a star trail picture that was taken in summer
in Milford Sound. I like the techniques he’s used here.
However I think I’d like this picture a lot more if he’d accentuated the star trails and made them
bolder and the trees and mountains were slightly lighter instead of fully blacked out. At first look I
actually thought the star trails was rain and then I read about the picture and had a better look at it.
This looks like the picture has been taken in complete darkness and the exposure is really effective.

5. I’ve noticed in all of the pictures Bernard Billedo takes, he makes sure the colours are extremely bold and stand out.
He does this in particular with his travel pictures. He makes all the places really exciting and colourful and like there is
tons going on. He accentuates all of the good things he sees and what catches his eye. Examples of this are below.
