Bernard Madoff ran the largest Ponzi scheme in history through his investment firm. Over decades, he misled investors and falsified documents to appear that their investments were growing, when in reality he was using new investors' money to pay returns to earlier investors. Madoff pled guilty to securities fraud and related crimes in 2009 and was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the maximum sentence.
