The principal provides a summary of the achievements and developments at Bentleigh West Primary School over the past year in their report. Some highlights include the successful school concert which was enjoyed by many, the establishment of a new art room producing some wonderful pieces of art work, and the new library becoming a popular shared space. Grade 7 and 8 had 81 in th e class. Solution: no children under 6 were to be admitted. 1938 Enrolled: 565. The number slightly decreased during the year due to an outbreak of Infantile Paralysis. 1942 In December a telephone was installed “a very necessary piece of equipment in a modern school” (Telephone XU 1228). 1953 Enrolled: 1067. 1954 Grades 2 & 3 ha d enrolments of 50 pupils. The Office Grand Prix – Is the Grand Prix a sustainably run event? “I really enjoyed being an environment monitor especially because of the Grand Prix. - 8. The Library 2012saw the introduction of a browsing library in the main building in the space originally known as “the Void”. The new library has had amazing success as an area where all newly purchased library books are located for a term before being permanently placed in a bo rrowing library in one of our four learning houses the following term. The Browsing Library provides students with a very popular, cosy, colourful, engaging , alternative space to sit, relax, read, play board games, draw of just have “time out” from the playground at lunch and recess times. The Browsing Library has been the venue for our very successful Scholastic Book Fair, the display of the CBCA “Book of the Year” short-list and award winners, the 2012 B ook Week display, the Mother’s Day display, the Remembrance Day display and the very popular display of our featured illustrator, Bronwyn Bancroft. The Bronwyn Bancroft display allowed our students to show their artistic talents by answering the question “Can you draw like Bronwyn?” The result was a fantastically colourful wall full of Australian animals created in Bronwyn’s Aboriginal art style. The students loved the chance to study Bronwyn’s art, reproduce it, and then see it displayed alongside Bronwyn’s work. 2012 has been an other successful year for our students in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge with all students in Mrs Carmel Clydesdale If you had a super power what would it be? The ability to fly. I often fly in my dreams and wake feeling so refreshed and energised! If you weren’t a teacher what would you be? A Zumba dancing, dog loving princess. Yay, 2/3rds of the way there! What is your favourite book? At the moment I am reading Game of Thrones, 2 kids books, 2 magazines and the latest copy of Literature Base and all are my favourites. Prep to Year 2 about to receive certificates for completing the Challenge. Book Week saw all staff and students dressing up as th eir favourite book characters and loving the chance to step into the fantasy world of books. The Library Monitors from Grades 5 and 6 have been wonderful asset to the school libraries – providing assistance and guidance not only to their peers but to teachers and staff as well. This library is also bright and colourful with people’s drawings and Carmel and Book Week On the 22nd of August, Bentleigh West celebrated Book Week. It was really fun. Everybody looked great. It was brilliant to see everybody dressing up and appreciating books. Everybody seemed to put a lot of effort into his or her costume. Book Week is a great experience to show everyone how fun reading books can be. People from every place that a marvellous book can take you participated in the parade and the book week celebration. - 10. From the Canteen Italian SSppeecciiaall ddaayyss iinn tthhee ccaanntteeeenn “I think our canteen is very healthy. There are lots of great things to eat, like frozen fruit, flavoured milk and dried fruit jars. Everyone loves Moozies and Juicies even if it’s cold outside. The theme days have been a great success and I really enjoy them. My favourite one was book week because there were lots of yummy foods like jelly and gingerbread. I think I’m really lucky to be able to help my mum and Kate to set up the canteen in the morning.” Emma Dowsing (3/4K) Kate (Canteen) If you had a super power what would it be? The focus of the canteen is to provide healthy food in an interesting and fun way and to encourage new foods to be tried. Special days in the canteen have included: • Pancake day • Book Week • Orange food day • Footy day I have also run c ompetitions called “Guess the vegetable” which has included such things as: • Jerusalem Artichokes • Kohl Rabi, also known as Sputnik Cabbage • Loofah Melon which when dried is used as th e loofah brushes found in your bathroom. In keeping with the environmental initiatives of the school, the canteen harvests from the vegie gardens and uses eggs from the chickens. Only the freshest produce for our kids. All waste is recycled. Kate (Canteen) Italian has been great! We’ve learnt la Moda (Fashion), ssttuuddiieedd tthhee mmaappss ooff IIttaallyy aanndd the regions. We cooked Italian Fritelle, they were very yummy. This term we’ve had lots of fun learning about fashion and preparing for our fashion show.
