Belle Boyd challenged societal expectations for women during the Civil War era. While women were generally expected to stay home and care for the household, Boyd actively spied for the Confederacy by overhearing Union battle plans being discussed and sending the information south. Though she was jailed as a consequence of her spying, Boyd was also able to benefit the Confederacy by helping them save a bridge at Fort Royal with the intelligence she gathered.
