Bella Gaia is an immersive multimedia presentation that uses music, visualizations, and NASA data to simulate the experience of seeing Earth from space. It aims to inspire appreciation for our planet and raise awareness of human impacts on Earth's systems. Through collaborations with NASA and performances around the world, Bella Gaia has engaged audiences of all ages in experiencing Earth as a fragile, interconnected system that we must work to protect. Feedback has shown the presentation is highly moving and effective in changing perspectives on environmental issues. Future plans include expanding live performances, developing new theatrical productions and digital content.
Most rivers have sacred personifications – in the form of tutelary deities. For the River Severn, this is ‘Sabrina’, or ‘Hafren’ in Welsh]. The project will seek to expand and deepen the ways in which water landscapes are encountered and understood – scientifically, artistically and socially.
Layers of industry, agriculture, vegetation, soil, rock and water make up the territory of the Severn Estuary. Cultural layers of prehistory, history and story and myth are enduring sources of conjecture. All of these – together with the human and non-human communities – fuse to form the ecology of the estuary, which has the second-largest tidal range in the world. This residency project will initiate new conversations and involvements by developing film/sound/music-based artworks, extracting some of the hidden and intangible essences of this water landscape.
As Artist In Residence, Antony Lyons will also draw on his own extensive previous work on water environment themes (pollution, climate-change, biodiversity, working water communities etc.), and link into CCRI research streams relating to ecosystem services, water/food security, landscape and community issues.

Discussion: How to Engage All Stakeholders in Program Evaluation
Stakeholder involvement and buy-in are arguably among the most important aspects of program evaluation. Without involvement and buy-in, evaluation efforts will fall short of its goals as comprehensive data collection will be invalid, or even worse, unobtainable.
What can you do as a leader to not only engage all stakeholders, but to help them to understand the importance of their active involvement?
In this Discussion, you revisit the in-service training at Connor Street Early Childhood Program.
The stakeholder discussion had been a lively one, and by the end, Sabrina and her colleagues were able to use the unique traits of each stakeholder group to create brief profiles:
Stakeholders
Profiles
Teachers
Teachers are new to the formal evaluation process. Children's academic and social-emotional developmental areas are primary drivers. Assessments and data collection are already taking up a lot of time and there is much fear about how to juggle more evaluations.
Families
Family dynamics have changed over the last few years with many new families moving into the area. English is the second language for many heads-of-households. Kindergarten readiness and safe places to play are primary drivers. Almost all families work long days outside of the home.
Support Staff
The home-based manager splits her time with three other programs in the community. She checks in with Connor Street’s home-school liaison once a week. Her primary concerns are the monthly averages of home visit numbers and length of time spent at homes.
The health assistant assumes multiple responsibilities throughout the day. She runs the clinic, tending to hurt or sick children, fills in at the front office when needed, and also counsels children who come to school upset. Once a year, she performs vision and hearing screening on each child who attends the program. Children’s health and well-being are her primary drivers.
Accrediting Agency
Accrediting agencies hold all programs accountable for achieving quality standards. The provision of educational and developmental services and resources are primary drivers.
Community
The community consists of working class and low-income families. Mainly residential, the community holds a handful of free events throughout the year such as movies on the lawn, fairs, and holiday celebrations. Though the community wants to give more, the lack of established businesses in the area negatively impacts the ability to hold fundraisers or food drives.
To prepare
Watch the media presentations in which presenters share how stakeholders were impacted by accreditation and evaluation processes. Then—with the Connor Street scenario in mind—review "Chapter 36, Section 3" and "Chapter 27, Section 1" of the Community Tool Box series. Though written in a community health context, consider how the interests and needs of all stakeholders are considered when designing and implementing evaluations. As an ea ...

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Bella Gaia summary
1. A Poetic Vision of Earth from Space
BELLA GAIA™ (Beautiful Earth) is an
astoundingly moving multimedia presentation – a
‘Living Atlas’ journey of our world, expressing
the transformative beauty of planet Earth as seen
through the eyes of astronauts by successfully
simulating space flight. The live show inspires
appreciation for our existence on planet Earth
and brings to attention the impact of human
activity on the Earth’s life systems. Collaborating
with NASA, BELLA GAIA is a new immersive
theater experience, a portal for an audience to
develop a deeper connection and empathy with our planet Earth through a profound journey of
direct experience. Created by award winning director and classically trained violinist Kenji
Williams, BELLA GAIA features a live performance by Kenji and top world music performers
with large scale orbiting visualizations of Earth from space.
Civilizations need a habitable planet and as the eminent opera singer Beverly Sills once
noted, “Art is the signature of civilizations.” With this in mind, BELLA GAIA showcases the
amazing art and cultural heritage of civilizations inhabiting planet Earth through live musical
performance on stage and projected visuals on screen. Using sophisticated scientific
visualizations powered by NASA data of fires in the Amazon basin to time-lapse images of the
Arctic ice, BELLA GAIA demonstrates the science behind what makes Earth habitable, and the
increasing imbalance caused in large part by human activity.
Acknowledging that our depths of creativity, the incredible success of the human species
so far, and the stunning beauty of creation all derive from nature’s dynamic systems, BELLA
GAIA evokes the wonder of the world and the Universe in audience members of all ages and
hues from around the world.
“BELLA GAIA is Just Beautiful.
It really felt like I was back in Space.”
- Piers Sellers, NASA Astronaut, Spacewalker (STS-112 Atlantis, STS 121 Discovery)
The vision of BELLA GAIA is to bring the power of art, technology, space science, and
real scientific data visualizations together, into a context that is both entertaining and educational,
fused with a common goal of raising the awareness and appreciation of our home planet. BELLA
GAIA can actually visually display how humans are affecting the planet, and how each element
affects the other, allowing the audience to easily understand the delicate interconnected balance
of our planet.
BELLA GAIA™ is a powerful entertainment and
educational outreach vehicle for performing arts
centers, festivals, planetariums, universities,
government agencies and other institutions that wish
to convey a broader world view that the destiny of
humans and our planet Earth are inextricably linked.
Often received with standing ovations, BELLA
GAIA has been featured at top festivals such as the
Smithsonian Folklife/NASA festival, 13 NASA
events, COP15 Copenhagen Climate Change
Summit, The Economist Magazine’s “World in 2011” conference, and to sold-out shows at
