3. Positive experiences of Rizal:
1. Rizal had a fruitful period in Dapitan from June 17 to July 31, 1896,
during which he focused on serving the people and the society
through his civic works, medical practices, land development, and
promotion of education. This was a time when he could actively
contribute to the betterment of the community.
Negative experiences of Rizal:
1. Rizal had to leave Manila under heavy guard aboard the steamer
Cebu, indicating a loss of freedom and the beginning of his exile.
2. His request to be sent as an army doctor to Cuba was possibly
driven by a desire to escape exile. However, he was not able to carry
out this plan as he was arrested and sent back to Manila to face trial
as an accomplice of the Katipunan insurrection, which was a
significant setback for him.
4. NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES
During his exile, José Rizal faced various challenges and negative experiences:
1. Isolation: Rizal was forcibly separated from his family and homeland. Being away from his loved ones and his
country caused emotional distress and a sense of isolation.
2. Limited Freedom: He was restricted in his movements and activities. He had to seek permission for almost
everything he did, making him feel confined and limited in his freedom.
3. Constant Surveillance: Rizal was under constant surveillance by Spanish authorities. His actions and
communications were closely monitored, which created a constant atmosphere of suspicion and fear.
4. Misunderstandings and Opposition: Rizal faced opposition from some local authorities and residents in
Dapitan. There were misunderstandings and conflicts, making his efforts to contribute to the community
challenging at times.
5. Uncertainty about the Future: Being in exile, Rizal lived with the uncertainty of his fate. He was aware that he
was a target for Spanish authorities, and this constant threat hung over him.
Despite these hardships, Rizal used his time in exile productively, making significant contributions to the
community in Dapitan and continuing his advocacy for reforms through his writings and actions.
5. 1. Malaria Prevention: Rizal drained marshes to eliminate Malaria,
understanding it was spread by mosquitoes in swampy areas.
2. Lighting System: He used payment from a patient to establish a
lighting system with coconut oil lamps in dark streets.
3. Beautification of Dapitan: Rizal, with Father Sanchez, remodeled the
town plaza and created a relief map of Mindanao in front of the
church.
4. Geography Teaching: He used the map to teach geography,
discussing Dapitan's position in relation to the rest of Mindanao.
6. 1. Secret Meeting (May 2, 1896):
Katipunan leader Bonifacio sent Dr. Pio Valenzuela to
inform Rizal of their plan to revolt against the
Spaniards.
2. Rizal's Objections: Rizal objected due to the
unpreparedness of Filipinos for a revolution and the
lack of sufficient arms and funds. He also declined a
rescue plan as it would break his word to Spanish
authorities.
7. Positive Experiences:
Although Rizal's trial finally resulted in his execution, there were some positive
parts and lessons he learnt, including the opportunity he had to voice his
opinions and thoughts in court. Rizal took advantage of the proceedings to
deny the accusations made against him. He claimed that his works weren't
revolutionary or seditious because they were meant to advance peaceful
reform and education. As well, the execution of Rizal strengthened the will of
Filipino revolutionaries to persevere on with their struggle for independence.
Negative Experience:
Jose Rizal's trial in 1896 was considered as unfair and biased by many people.
The procedures were considerably influenced against him since the Spanish
authorities were eager to convict him. Rizal was accused of triggering rebellion
and revolt because of his novels. As a result, Rizal was executed by firing
squad in Bagumbayan.
