Pumpkins are a popular Halloween decoration that are often carved and used to make foods. Americans purchase nearly 600 million pounds of candy and spend about $7 billion total for Halloween celebrations each year, with $300 million spent on costumes for pets. Halloween originated from a Scottish and Irish tradition where children wore costumes and went door-to-door collecting food, and it is now commonly celebrated with trick-or-treating by 36 million children in the US.
