• 4 career transitions since 1999
• Longest stint – 10 months (kind of)
• Shortest stint – 5 seconds
• Of note
• Twice I had multiple offers outstanding at the same time
• My most recent success stories (due to networking)
• Still networking today

• Protocol (how can I help you?)
• Web sites (and their respective protocols

Selected Idea #1 - Organize
• Plan your day as if it was a workday
• Dress for success (there is no such thing as a
second first impression)
• Schedule job search activities
• Schedule personal activities
• Keep a log
• Keep track of expenses – tax deductible!

• No cute email addresses (HotToTrot@aol.com, ImpressiveStud@yahoo.com)
• Display name(preferred view)
• Don’t use ‘refer to attached’ without more
• Keep message simple (one screen if you can)
• “I will call you in the next few days to confirm receipt of this email and to arrange a
mutually convenient time for us to discuss my credentials in greater detail.”
• Don’t be sending at 2:45 a.m.
• Voice mail messages – incoming – separate line for job search
• Voice mail messages – outgoing
• Be brief
• Name, number to start; name number to end
• When available – ported cell phone numbers make it unknown as to where you are on
the planet.

Selected Idea #3 – Networking
• Face-to-face visibility is key
• Attend career transition groups AND professional association
events
• Focus on 1-3 personal associations and develop these
relationships to their fullest (can’t get to know everyone)
• Refreshen relationships – vendors, such as graphic design
firms, other consultants, etc.
• Outside legal counsel/auditing firm
• Fact – 4 out of 5 jobs are secured via networking
51/24/2015
Selected Idea #4 – Internet Guidelines
• Resources plentiful, but not as effective
• Essential to the mix
• (Steve Susina’s success is the only one I have heard of}
• Be sure to update on a regular basis
• When there is nothing else to do and you have satisfied
personal (other than job search) activities

Go Yourself
101/24/2015
Selected Idea #9 – Internet Resources – Other –
What’s That Noise
111/24/2015
Selected Idea #10 – Internet Resources –
Consulting – Establish a Presence
121/24/2015
Selected Idea #11 - Other
• Quantify accomplishments – and put in proper perspective
• Increased sales 100% sounds good but not if you sold 2 this year versus 1 last year and your
quota was 10
• 30-second value proposition – no more than three beach ball
• Ask others to describe you and incorporate
• Do not omit dates (graduation) and include ALL work experience
• Be sure to include summary description of prior companies you have worked for as initial
screener is most likely much younger than you
• Active listening – answer question asked (paraphrase if needed to be sure you understand) and no
more
• Interviewer is most likely as uncomfortable as you are
• Don’t name your file as Resume.docx; EschbachStevenResumeJanuary2015.docx much better
• Search/life balance
• Plenty more, but not enough time…
