Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral on December 29, 1170. Four knights loyal to King Henry II entered the cathedral and killed Becket with swords after hearing the King say that he wanted rid of his troublesome Archbishop. The murder shocked Europe and led to Becket's canonization as a saint in 1173, making Canterbury Cathedral an important site of pilgrimage in the late medieval period.
