Content
What is beat up
It is a process of pushing the
newly inserted weft yarn to
the already woven fabric at a
point known as the fell of the
cloth with the help of a reed.
Beating up mechanism
Beating up mechanism is the third primary motion in weaving. It consists in
driving the last pick of weft to the fell of the cloth. This is accomplished
with the help of a reed fixed in the sley. The sley is given a sudden and
quick movement towards the fell of the cloth by the cranks in the
crankshaft. The sleywood runs from one shuttle box to another, and when
at its backward movement, the shuttle travels over its race.
Objectives
 To push the newly inserted pick to the cloth
fell
 To ensure uniform pick spacing
Main parts
1. Reed
2. Guide
3. Cloth support
4. Sley
5. Shaft
6. cams
Common beat up
Common beat up Mechanism In fig, A is the sley, B is the
sleysword, C the rocking shaft, D the crank, X is the
crank shaft , E the crankarm, F the connecting pin, Y is
reed, G a metal plate on the sleysword, H is the lath, J &
k is bolt and T is plate. C is supported on bearing and
bolted to end frame. Crankarm E is fulcrummed to the
sleysword B and is bent on the crankshaft. As D revolves
a swinging motion is given to the sley. After the shuttle
passes the weft thread is pushed to fell by reed Y which
is mounted on the sley sword by means of H T and J.
Double beat up mechanism In carpet and other
heavy looms it needs two blows to the weft in
quick succession during one revolution of the
crankshaft, by straightening two arms which are
knuckle jointed. Each time they are straight sley
gives a beat up. Here, A is sword, B is crank, C is
a connecting arm, D is knuckle joint, E is an arm
jointed to frame I and F is another arm attached
to sley.
