About the Scholarship
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes informed and
engaged communities by supporting transformational ideas that advance
quality journalism and media innovation, engage communities and foster
the arts. The foundation’s engagement work centers on the communities
where the Knight brothers owned newspapers – including Long Beach,
Calif. The scholarship is funded through Knight’s national arts program,
which aims to weave the arts into people’s everyday lives.
Knight Foundation is proud to partner with Long Beach filmmaker Dee
Rees (PARIAH), and outstanding LBGT film organization Outfest to
present the 2012 “Be The Bridge” Scholarship program to support and
empower LBGT Youth and their communities.
Through the program, a total of $5,000 in unrestricted funds will be
awarded to LBGT High School Juniors, Seniors or College Freshman
currently residing in the Long Beach or Los Angeles, California area.
Scholarship Objectives
• To encourage and empower LBGT youth to create positive change in
their communities by bridging the gap between their multi-faceted
identities and the broader world.
• To engage communities in the Long Beach/Los Angeles area in
thoughtful discussion and collective harmony by developing artistic
and journalistic talent that reflects the Los Angeles area’s diverse
population
• To increase access to LBGT education, support, and resources among the
diverse communities of Long Beach & Los Angeles

Eligibility
• Applicants must be current students who are upcoming High School
Juniors, Seniors or incoming College Freshman
• Applicants must be a current resident of Long Beach or Los Angeles,
CA (Long Beach residents are strongly encouraged to apply)
How to Apply
The application period for the 2012 Be The Bridge Scholarship is May 24th
– June 22, 2012. Applications will close at 6 p.m. PST on Friday, June 22,
2012. Materials not postmarked by this date will not be accepted.
Applicants must submit a completed application as follows:
1. CHALLENGE QUESTION
Answer the following question by using any single one of the
following response methods:
• A 500-750 word Essay; OR
• A painting, drawing, or photograph; OR
• A 3-5 minute video
“How do your many different identities/affiliations (ie:
ethnicity, sexuality, background, religion) intersect within
your life and how can you use who you are to bridge those
differences and be a positive influence in the world?
2 . IMPACT STATEMENT
Please state in 250 words or less how will this scholarship will impact your
continued educational or artistic development.

Though not required, you may submit up to two letters of reference that
were written within the last year (after January 2012), preferably from an
teacher or organization that can speak to your academic achievement or
contributions to your local community.

Award Criteria
Entries will be judged by a panel of distinguished members of the Los
Angeles journalistic and artistic community. Awards will be based on the
following criteria:
1. Strength, persuasiveness, and sincerity of answer to challenge question
2. Artistic quality and merit
3. Impact of the scholarship on the student’s career
4. Applicant is representative of the Los Angeles area’s diverse
communities, including those defined by ethnicity, sexual orientation,
disability, economic circumstances or geographic location
At the panel’s discretion, the panel will award a minimum of one (1)
scholarship and a maximum of five (5) scholarships to total $5,000 in
awards.
Notification and Timing
Winners will be notified of their results no later than July 10th, 2012 and
will be announced during the 2012 Outfest Awards ceremony. Winner(s)
must be present and available to accept their award during the Outfest
awards ceremony on July, 22nd. Some of the winning entries may also be
showcased online during the Outfest film festival; recognized on the
PARIAH facebook page; or featured in local news publications.
